Morning ed. Great result last night, I'm not normally one to mention specific player performances, but surely Matip's tendancy to volley the ball at his own net should see him dropped for Lovren as soon as he's fit? I've never seen a cb do it so regularly and on another day could of cost us the game.

{Ed001's Note - I would swap them myself, until Gomez is fit anyway.}

I thought matip played okay last night. Where was he supposed to put the ball with lewandowski breathing down his neck? He drove forward with the ball and was a danger at set pieces. He also kicked lewandowski off the park.

I'd still pick lovren over him though and gomez over the both of them.

Is it me or could allison dealt with the cross? Any defender in that position is more than likely going to put in the back of his own net.

Robbo was at fault for the goal and lewa was there to tap it in, I think Matip did ok. We haven’t lost a game he’s played, I really don’t know why people are caught up on Lovren, he threw countless points away last season. If anything they’re both average defenders and we definitely need an upgrade come the summer. De liht competing with Gomez would be awesome, I thought he was great against Real Madrid.

As much as I don't rate Matip I don't blame him for the own goal. It was just one of them, I don't think many could've avoided it.

Still though, he scares me half to death when he's on the pitch and I can't bloody wait until Lovren and Gomez are fit, until then he'll have to do but again, I can't point the finger at him for that goal.

P1, it’s you, believe me it’s you.

I dunno, matip has definitely improved. And having him and vvd at corners and set pieces is so dangerous and difficult to defend.

One of the posters said we haven't lost a game he has played in. He can't be doing too much wrong.

He isn't an old defender, he has time to improve and he clearly is improving. And it'd something we should all be hoping for.

People wrote lallana off this season but he has proved he can adapt, I think matip deserves a break. He kept a legend of a cf completely quiet last night and he seemed more aggressive, which has always been my criticism of him.

P1 and OP, absolutely not Matip's fault. In fact, by getting a foot on it he at least introduced the *possibility* of the move not resulting in a goal (could've gone over, woodwork, past etc) . If he hadn't connected, Lewa was right behind him.

The 'error' (if you can call it that) was made when Gnabry was able to get past Robbo.

Matip seems to be getting a lot of stick on here lately, but more often than not, he is defensively sound. It's his unpredictability on the ball that is letting him down. He needs to understand that he doesn't need to do something special every time he receives the ball. He needs to take a leaf out of VVDs book and keep it simple 99% of the time.

Well said red rum. Simple and accurate.

I can also see a partnership with vvd being formed although Joe gomez is the 2nd best cb at the club.

Lerchy, "Lovren threw away countless points last season". Care to elaborate on that cos That is patently false? You may not think he is good enuff and that is fine BUT pls, stop making up nonsense about players you don't like. That makes your argument dishonest and mean-spirited.
