Opinion Eds and Fellow Reds, I'd like some views:

Gary Neville has recently suggested that Liverpool should forget about the champions league and just concentrate on the league.

Now, at present, I don't like the thought of how the players would feel being knocked out of the Champs League even-though it would be a welcome break between fixtures. To be honest, when that has happened in recent months it hasn't really gone as planned as I don't think the continuity is there.

I actually think it would be better to try and stay in the competition (not that they'd try and lose on purpose obviously) . To ensure a good feeling and give more confidence to the team as well as help with momentum going forward.

Just be interested in everyone else's thoughts.

9 league games to go and we've still only lost 1 league game. We could potentially lose 1 league game all season and still finish runners up! Has that ever happened before? Man City have lost 4 games already so surely they're going to drop points somewhere!? My worry, is that we possibly will too and that could make the difference.

Anyway, 1 game at a time and I'll forever be the pessimist until it is mathematically impossible for someone else to win it!

Cheers in advance.

{Ed025's Note - try to win every game for me gouldy, not only does it bring momentum but its that feel good factor that comes with winning, it also means less training which im sure the guys would enjoy, contemplating losing is a very slippery slope mate and should never enter a player or managers head..

The record is only 2 losses in a season and not winning the prem and that was Benitez Liverpool of 2007-2008 i think.

Couldn't agree more eds. Maybe that's why Neville has suggested losing as he wants us on the slippery slope you speak of! I think winning game after game is fantastic for momentum. Here's hoping we can start a 9 league game winning streak!

Thanks for the swift response, your comments, as usual are always greatly appreciated :-)

Going out of the League and FA cup didn't do us any favours, did it?

{Ed025's Note - your right irish, and neither did the recent breaks you had either mate....momentum is everything..

I wouldn’t listen to a word Gary Neville says. Let’s smash Bayern and see where the win takes us!

I now think the Bayern game is will have a big affect on our league challenge, we need to win to regain some confidence and momentum. I still think being out of the FA cup is a help as our squad IMO is still quite shallow. The Champions league is a different story.

Liverpool football club was built on European Success.

{Ed025's Note - i think it was built before 1962 mate, but their reputation may have been..

I'm very weary about a manc giving us advice on how our season should go.

As you say, throwing away the other cups has done us no favours. More than that though, during the 2010-2016 wilderness years, we were absolutely begging for champions league football. We couldn’t wait to get back into the competition, some couldn’t ever see it happening. Now we’re back in on a consistent basis, after all that waiting, and now some people want us to throw it away at the first sniff of a league title?

True winners, true champions, teams worthy of silverware, wouldn’t even consider that, and neither should we. If this manager and group of players want to prove they are anything other than small fry, they have to actually try to win the competitions they compete in.

To give you an idea of the scale of the problem and the cancer of failure that is currently rife through this club, look back to the last win FA cup in 2006, and consider what has transpired since then:

Champions league final lost in 2007.
Title challenge collapse in the second half of the 2008/ 09 season.
FA cup final lost in 2012.
2013/ 14 title collapse right at the death.
League Cup final lost in 2016.
Europa league final lost in 2016.
Champions league final lost in 2018.

The only thing we have succeeded at winning during that time, in 12 years and counting, is a league cup. We have a seriously large monkey to get off our backs, and i think the players and the manager have to recognise that they are in no position to field weakened teams in every single competition that is not the premier league. The insepid performances at United and Everton have left me with a sickening feeling that it will be yet another year of waiting, but i’m hoping they can prove me wrong and turn it around. The toxicity of the fanbase at the moment is alarming and will not be helping the players one bit, but it is very hard to be positive when we have come so close to success on so many occasions, only to fall at the final hurdle.

Im personally zero interested in anything Gary Neville or any other professional utd expert has to say on what we're doing.

AW, I think you are being a tad fatalistic about things and a bit harsh. I fully agree that we should not be tanking the CL this season for ANYTHING and esp. not cos some manc who does not mean us well said so just cos we have a chance at the PL title. Also, we should be giving the other trophies a right go and credit to Klopp and in fact BR, we did give those a right go and made the final and unfortunately, could not get over the hump.

Having said that, the whole "cancer of failure" rhetoric is a bit far fetched and frankly, unfounded, IMO. Only in England do fans see a club that has made it to every domestic and international competition as a cancer of failure. That to me, is defeatist and frankly, does a disservice to all the blood, sweat and tears that got us to those finals. I'll give you an example.

Look at Germany. Like LFC of late, They have made a final or semis of the WC or the Euros more than ANY other country on the planet YET they have not won as many as they should have. Look at them under Jochim Loew. He took over Germany in 2006 and made the final of the Euro's in 2008, a semi final in WC 2010 and Euro 2012 before FINALLY winning the WC in 2014. They still made the semis in the Euro's in 2016. 1 trophy out of 4. By your logic, Loew should have been sacked before he won the WC cos well, he is a failure right? The German FA thought differently. They knew that he was getting closer and that is progress cos like it or not, the more opportunities you get to play finals, the more one will break for you. Loew then got the big one in Brazil and the rest is history.

Also remember that the only teams who win finals are the ones who actually get to PLAY in them, and not those who don't. Spurs are nowhere near competing in finals the same way we have been doing esp. since Klopp arrived BUT they call us and Klopp a failure. To me, they are the real failures cos they don't even get anywhere near a final. Now, this does not mean I'm happy with coming close or losing finals and all that cos I'm not. I'm just looking at it from an optimistic point of view. Stay the course, learn the lessons, believe in what you are doing and it will break for you. Hopefully, this season? Cheers, man and sorry for the long post.

The thing is If Liverpool get through to the next round of the CL you could argue it will be easier to win that than the league as at least that is in our own hands where the league we are relying on City to drop points. But I’m also in the camp where I’d rather keep momentum and win the games. I think an exit next week could have a negative effect on the boys.

I think you will find Spurs have won as many trophies as Liverpool in the last 12 years.

Technically the champions league is in our hands and the league isn’t, I would also fancy us to beat the 4 teams currently in the 1/ 4 finals so I see no reason not to go for it.

Cobra -"I would also fancy us to beat the 4 teams currently in the 1/ 4 finals" is probably the same thoughts that fans of, PSG, roma real madrid and dortmund before they played the last round.
Re Nevilles comments I would say go for every game to win as losing or drawing is a bad habit and generally waste of time. As a utd fan, I really don't care who wins the epl as this season it won't be us, but cl is knockout and any of the 1/ 4 finalists can go on to win- the secret could be squad depth and experience of winning;)

Gary Neville is trying to play some sort of mind game been a United fan he wants Liverpool to win nothing

We need momentum and a distraction from the league and "pressure of the league non-sense"

Tell me this what would help the squad more beating Bayren 3-0 or loosing 3-0 and been the only English side to get knocked out.

IR, yand how many finals both foreign and domestic, have Spurs played in? You can't compete for trophies if you don't play finals or are knocked out in the early rounds. Again, that was my point.

Spurs have played in 3 finals in 12 years, Liverpool 5, not much difference. Anyway the post was about Liverpool not Spurs. Stop deflecting its embarrassing!
