Hi Ed001, hope you are well.

Would you be able to clarify the following?

Lets say club X bought a player last season from club Z and club X want to sell that player a season later still owing much of the transfer fee.

Would club X have to settle the balance of the fee owing to club Z for the player should club X choose to sell?

{Ed001's Note - club X would just be bound by the previous transfer agreement, so would have to pay the balance at the agreed time.}

Probably opening a can of worms here, but what would happen if there were performance based add ons in the initial agreement Ed? I guess it would probably depend on what was agreed?

{Ed001's Note - if there were performance based add ons it is just unlucky. When you agree a deal like that it is a risk.}

I understand that on a few occasions some contracts with performance based fees and payments are protected by penalty clauses in case a club sells a player, the player gets injured or the player goes on strike, refuses to play etc etc. Portsmouth received performance based payments for Benjani when he flopped at Man City due to these "protection clauses". Id be surprised if Michael Edwards hasn't concocted a deal that would benefit Liverpool regardless of the successes or failings of other clubs or players. It's kinda like having insurance on an investment, the club will receive some proportion of the performance based add-ons in the event of an early sale etc.

I had this same chat with Ed002 a few weeks back.

Importantly, if they do sell him, they can still pay the stage payments as planned (non-performance related) . They don’t have to pay them all up front. So they could sell him entirely for cash up front and still be cash positive as there are some phased payments due upto (IIRC) Jun 20.

It’s just tough luck about the performance related bonuses, albeit it’ll mainly be the appearance related ones we will miss out on, as well as the ones linked to Barcelona winning the CL, unless they do this year.
