I know it’s been mentioned that Gerard when he was a youth coach focused on results over development, just wanted to ask what sort of example gave that impression?

Think it was a combination of only playing best and oldest players whenevr possible rather than trying to bring through youngsters and I think he was also quite openly bothered by losing his best Under 18 players to the Under 23s.

To be fair, all the youth players seemed to like working with him and they did get some great results but I do get the sense that it was more of a stepping stone in management for him rather than him being excited to be part of the youth setup.

The constant moaning about his players being picked for the u23s or going on loan becasue his team were no longer good enough to win the title and therefor show him as a good manager. It was all about trying to make him look good so he could climb the ladder which he managed not about him contributing to some of our young players development.

He had a winning mentality.
A bit like Shearer and his goalscorer mentality. For example in training Shearer used to smash every shot as hard as possible like he did in real games and he used to celebrate every goal in training in the same manner.

Gerrard has that winning mentality and it meant more to him to win than anything else.
I think it’s an admirable trait.

And something missing in todays snowflake generation, i think stevie, lamps and scholesy will all be top managers in a few years.

{Ed001's Note - not for kids it isn't and that shows a lack of any understanding of youth development. It is nothing to do with this idiotic notion of 'snowflakes' you have. It is to do with the fact that players, of all ages, develop best when they have the freedom to improve. That is why the older generation that were bullied by coaches were doing their improvement in playgrounds, on parks, in the streets, not at youth academies. You are displaying a brutal ignorance in your comment and this kind of thing is why British teams were so damn crap at developing young players.

Whether it be surgeons, footballers or any skill, it is best developed in an environment where there is no blame culture. Once you have the skills, then you can use them under pressure, but you have to have them first as you do not learn them while having Gerrard bullying you to win.

Gerrard might make a top manager, but he won't do it by demanding, Lampard doesn't even work that way and I very much doubt Scholes will either, as he did not come through a youth system that did.}

Not that I would pretend to know anything about youth development, but I think there needs to be a balance.
They need to develop a competitive streak as well, there are a lot of very skilful footballers who never make it. I think you need that passion and drive to succeed.

I doubt Gerrard will make a great ‘coach’ but he may make a great manager. He has a lot of the traits.

{Ed001's Note - a competitive streak is nothing to do with having pressure to win from the outside Ron. That is about the player themselves wanting to win, to be better than the opponent, not from outside pressures saying 'you must win or else'.}

Just seen this ed, wasnt expecting that! I certainly wouldn't condone bullying but something has been lost with this generation, not just in football.

I still think they should clean the pros boots and muck in cleaning etc, just to make these kids appreciate what they have and where they are, respect is disapearing fast.

Ed, do you think Gerrard applies that pressure because of his own desire to win? Do you think he might have the same issue as Roy Keane in terms of he can’t understand why all players do not want to run through walls for the team?

{Ed001's Note - yes that is it exactly. He thinks everyone should be like him and struggles to understand that some just aren't like that and need a different kind of treatment. I am sure he can learn to change though.}
