I think that all these injuries will impact on our suumer transfers, we need to bring in another centre back for sure, Lovren just can't stay fit, but, if we bring in the right players, then we go up another level,
we are now an elite team, we need to stay one .

I don't get this "bring in a CB". Firstly, who is available that we could afford. Secondly, anyone you bring in would have to be a starter, thus basically stalling Gomez's career instantly. We have an exceptional young CB in Gomez, a future England captain learning from a world class CB in Virg. Why would we disrupt that just to buy some "amazing world class CB" (who has never played in the PL)? Lovren is a decent back up who I think understands the situation and his place in the squad. Gomez has been extremely unlucky with injuries. You don't win a league with 11 players, you win it by utilizing the players you have available at that time.

Because stuie 3 of our 4 CBs cannot stay fit, 2 of them aren’t good enough and 1 of them is also our back up right back. We quiet clearly need another reliable CB.

All this “no one will come to sit on the bench/ rotate” stuff is nonsense. Look at City who have several good players in every position, if you’re competing for titles people want to come and be part of it.

Also, before anyone says “Gomez isn’t injury prone, he just got an unlucky broken leg”, when has he gone a season without more than a month out injured? He hasn’t.

This season’s injury is down to having to cover RB so never getting a proper rest. When players are more tired. They’re more likely to get injured as their bodies are fatigued so don’t do the same things as fresh bodies.

We need a new RB and to let Matip or Lovren go to be replaced with a new CB.
In an ideal world Mignolet and Moreno will also leave and be replaced, hardly all likely to happen in one summer, but this squad are still a long way off the finished article.

{Ed002's Note - Given that you see two of the four CBS as not good enough it is a surprise Liverpool are doing so well with all of this trash playing for them. The comment about MC is of no consequence - Liverpool does not have the money to do that.}

If we were to bring in another CB, it would either have to be someone better than Lovren and Matip, but not as good as Gomez, but happy to be cover. I think that's quite a fine profile that you're setting and I doubt there's anyone that fits those variables.

The other option is to bring someone in on the same level as Lovren or Matip that is even younger than Joe Gomez. Maybe someone like Upamecano from RB Leipzig, but he'd be very pricey. Maybe someone a year or two younger as he's only a year younger than Gomez, but then you have to question if there's someone in the academy at that level.

I do think that our young Dutch lad, Ki-Jana Hoever could end up being the answer. In which case, just holding onto Lovren and Matip would be the best option, and wait for Hoever to develop. I really don't think it will be long before he's seriously knocking on the door for a starting place.

{Ed002's Note - Typically clubs do not try and recruit players by saying we want someone not as good as x.}

KK, which brings me back to my point of, who would you get who is actually realiticly attainable for LFC? People just assume there's a group of amazing CB's lining up to join us for peanuts who would stroll in and be better than what we have.

13.) 04 Feb 2019

KK, using City as an example is a false argument to the point of being ridiculous. City spent over 170m on defenders alone last season (FB's and CB) so you think LFC can do that? Also, Otamendi and Kompany were ther before Pep arrived and both rearely ever play as Pep prefers Stones and Laporte, both of whom he signed for over 100m combined. That's about 270m on defenders alone that Pep has spent. If you think LFC will do that then you are supporting the wrong club and deluding yourself. We will NOT be doing that anytime soon, neither do I want us to do that. Crippling the club just to match a club being funded by owners with enough money to fund a countries budget, is lunacy at it's highest.

I never said we should spend £270 million on defenders. I said we need a new CB, entirely different.

I agree that it will be hard to find someone, but not impossible as people are suggesting. The link I made to city was that we will be able to sign people to rotate, like they have.

Spurs have better depth than us in most areas too, eriksen, lamela, Alli, Lucas, Son, all rotate 3 positions. Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Sanchez and Davies all rotate CB (and Left back in the case of Davies) .

Chelsea have several good quality CBS who rotate, United have a wealth of attacking talent who rotate.

I just used city as one example of this, but all the other top clubs have depth and rotate better than we are able too.

I’m not trying to say our players are poor, we are top of the league so clearly they are not. But some of them are not good enough rotation for the first 11, particularly in defence (Moreno, Matip, Mignolet and Clyne (now gone but our RB cover before he left) ) . Can anyone argue that this squad is perfect and needs no investment?

I doubt it. We are still only part way through rebuilding the squad under Klopp and I personally think the back up defenders and keeper are the most important next phase.

I’m also not saying we can achieve it in one window as we also probably need to replace Milner and need a back up striker when Sturridge inevitably leaves. I think we will probably be in a far better place to sustain a challenge next year and I really hope that is in defence of the league title.

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool's squad is the same size as that of the other sides. Would you really swap Van Dijk, Gomez, Lovren and Matip for Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Sanchez and Davies - thereby giving Spurs more depth than Spurs. I guess Eriksen, Lamela, Alli, Lucas and Son would give Liverpool much more depth and a better chance than Shaqiri, Mane, Salah, Lallana and Oxlade-Chamberlain. Hard to believe that Spurs are not miles ahead of Liverpool this season.}
