Morning Ed,

I was watching a piece on Kuyt yesterday, although he wasn’t as prolific for Liverpool as some others he scored some important goals. What was your thoughts on him as a player?

{Ed001's Note - Kuyt was a decent goalscorer at a lower level, but when the main asset someone has is that they work hard (which should be the absolute minimum requirement of ALL players) then you know they aren't actually that good. I loved him but, sadly, have to admit he just wasn't really quite good enough for the Prem. He should have been Torres' back up as the striker, which was why he was brought in to play up front, but for Gerrard throwing the toys out of the pram and refusing to play on the right any more. So the lad ended up playing right wing more often than not and never grumbled, always gave his all, but technically he was just not quite up to it.}

That said, I can't think of a player who's heart and effort is matched by Bobby Firmino than Dirk. The fans loved him for it.

Scored some big goals and if half the players in the prem currently, had his work effort and heart they would be twice the players they are.

I thought he did okay on the wing and when he got through on goal you felt confident he would hit the net.

Lucas was not the most gifted player although his passion, effort and heart have made him an anfield legend. I think kuyt is in the same bracket. Not first choice but did well when called upon.

Personally I loved him. YNWA DK.

Gerrard was right to throw his toys out of the pram. You don’t put your best player out of position. Kuyt had plenty of work ethic but was never good enough.

{Ed001's Note - out of position? And no player should dictate to a manager where they play. Gerrard's best and most productive season came on the right, so what makes you say he was out of position? He couldn't be trusted to work back in midfield, which cost us under Rodgers, so he certainly wasn't a central midfielder. He scored goals and created goals from the right, he was exceptional out there, I am not sure how you can suggest he was out of position when, at the time, he had not settled into any position on the pitch and that was his first settled season in one position and turned out to be the best of his career statistically. Gerrard should have remembered he was just one player and the team is more important than he will ever be and play where the manager tells him to play. It was allowing Gerrard to dictate to the club that kept us from winning the league for so long. We ended up with dross like Cole in the team and Torres wanting to leave because of it, and so were never able to build on any successes.}

I remember in fifa that year. If you played Gerrard in cm or acm he was 86, if you played him out right he was 88/ 89.

Please don't disrespect Kuyt like this! What a warrior he was.!

{Ed025's Note - warriors are fine if you are in a war eka, but to win titles you need quality and as much as he tried his best he fell well short of that mate..

Carlitoc, you saying SG was right to throw his toys out of his pram, is what is wrong with fans today. SG does not run LFC and as Ed said, the club and the manager should never have let him dictate where he would play. That is pathetic and the fact that you support such reprehensible behavior, says a lot more about you than anything else.

Now to the real debate. Ed is correct. Gerrard did not have a set position at LFC cos before then, he played mostly on the right and at times in CM. Rafa was right to put SG out there on the right cos whatever defensive nous he lacked, others could cover for him there and that was in the 05/ 06 season. In that season, SG scored the most goals (20 plus) and the most assists in his LFC career.

Therefore, it means Rafa was right to put him out there. SG screwed up a tonne and his reprehensible conduct at times should NEVER be glossed over or supported cos he was a very good player for us. Take this from a guy who actually has a Steven Gerrard no. 8 shirt with the word "Legend" behind it, in his wardrobe.

I must admit whilst I loved Gerrard as a player I dread to think if Klopp leaves and Gerrard has a couple of decent season at Rangers that they may look to bring him in as manager. I just don’t think he’s anywhere near ready or likely to be. Let’s hope sentiment for st rule that decision if it comes to it.

Swishcleaner, that would be a dreadful idea, IMO.
