Can any ed help here
during the time when stubbs and mcateer were linked with us is true
A that stubbs turned us down for Blackburn and B true that mcateer chose us over arsenal and C did Collymore come to us even though he was offered more money elsewhere at the time?

{Ed001's Note - Stubbs did turn us down, not for anyone else, just turned us down as he was an Evertonian and did not want to join us. McAteer was desperate to join us and rejected a couple of other offers. We were the only team to meet the ludicrous asking price for C****more.}

As always mate thank you for very swift reply
Mcateer just went up in my estimation lol.

{Ed001's Note - it was a dream come true for him and he was never going to go anywhere else if we were interested.}

It always makes me cry every time I bring this fact up.

We signed Collymore for £9 million in the same transfer window that Arsenal signed Bergkamp for £8 million.

Oh no, I'm filling up again. :' (.

Ed001, can you imagine what a Bergkamp/ Fowler partnership would have been like?

You have to remember that it was Bruce Rioch that signed Dennis. It's not like he signed because of the manager's reputation.

{Ed001's Note - Bergkamp would have been sensational for us.}

Bergkamp would have been sensational kicking a tin can around in the park, once of the best players to ever step on to a football pitch.

There’s an inevitable element of hindsight to this debate though, even though I don’t disagree with the ultimate assessment.
Bergkamp had flopped badly in Italy (Inter if I recall) and it subsequently took him a long while to settle in at Arsenal.
Whilst, conversely, Collymore’s star was very much on the rise and he looked a good buy, the modern striker full of pace and power.
But it went downhill from there, his own problems alas.

always a red - exactly why I cringe every time I hear Collymore's name. How different it could have been.

The Juicer - It always makes me wonder if part of a medical should include an assessment of a player's mental health and maybe a personality profile.

I've gone for so many interviews and had to fill out so many questionnaires to try to profile my personality. If such a thing was in practice (I know it was a different era, and I wouldn't like a simple questionnaire being used but more a personal one on one assessment) surely if both Bergkamp and Collymore were profiled, we'd have signed the former instead. We can talk about hindsight all we want but if players were assessed on a psychological level as well as physical, unless the psychological expert was a complete imbecile, we'd never have signed Collymore.

Collymore was immense, him and fowler the season they had together were just mouth watering. Just a shame collymore was and still is a complete bell end.

Pegleg - I know it's a bit of a taboo to talk about, but I don't think Collymore is right in the head. Hence my reasoning to bring up mental health and the debate of whether the club should be screening for it.

Of course Stan has never been in the news about sectioning or anything, but Aaron Lennon and Steven Caulker (just to pick 2 out of the hat) have had problems. Maybe it should be part of the medical.

We're really deviating from the point here though. I simply commented about Collymore being a preferred signing opposed to signing Dennis Bergkamp, and we've gone way off tangent, which is my fault entirely.

But like I said, it still pains me that we signed Stan as opposed to Dennis (for more money) .

I’ve spoken to McAteer about the day he signed for us. He was in a meeting with Dalglish at Blackburn as we hadn’t come in for him so he was about to sign for them. Next thing his agent has taken a call and told him Roy Evans wanted to see him as Liverpool had agreed a fee with Bolton. He explained this to Kenny and said he wanted to speak to Liverpool. Kenny told him if he leaves his office the deal is off, so he grabbed his coat and made his way to Liverpool!
He also said he got into loads of trouble with Bolton for celebrating with the league cup after we beat them at Wembley! 😂 Quality!

Loved MacAteer and MacMannaman overlapping, must of been a nightmare to defend against.
