thanks for the updates.

whao, i always thought the Orders were given to distinguished individuals who had contributed significantly to the arts and sciences, charitable works and public service. were there acts of chivalry that these people did that the public is unaware of? or has the criteria changed?

{Ed001's Note - they have normally been given to people who bought them through contributions to the political party in charge. Then a few left over given out to get popular votes to usually completely undeserving sportspeople. The leftovers are then given to a few who do actually deserve them.}

These honours are crazy. For me they should only be given to sports people when they have achieved something I. e. geraint Thomas and not Kane and Southgate. Although I also think that they shouldn’t get them until they have retired so you can take there career as a whole!

Honours now are pointless imo, they are just handed out for the sake of it and not to people who actually deserve them.

Completely agree WY, it's a nonsense now mate.

Er, exsqueeze me? I fink you’ll find that Harry Kane won the golden boot, actually. So he is a winner. And Southgate won coach of the year.

Kane getting any kind of honour in the same year he swore on his daughters life over a football goal is just pathetic.

“ he swore on his daughters life over a football goal ”

Sorry, are we still in the Dark Ages? Criticise Kane all you want for playing football but let’s keep superstition and fairy tales out of it.

Cheers for that ed, redinthewrongway you get a pass on that comment but only because you referenced a popular Star Wars quote. #gungan4life.

sorry Redinthewrongway, i disagree.
these footballing awards you cited are nothing special in this context. different managers and players will collect them in the course of their careers, and they are wonderful, but doesn't warrant an honor as high as that of a MBE or more.

i'm sure there are many others who've achieved more in their area of expertise than just winning employee of the year and are expecting to have such high honors.

i agree with MK on this. regardless of achievement, the character of Kane in that particular instance was quite shocking to be deserving of any meaningful citation.

I know that’s said firmly with tongue firmly in mouth RITWW.

My point stands though that it’s great individual achievements but not worthy of an honour.

If Liverpool go unbeaten and win the league I don’t expect Hendo to get one for being captain.

These should be reserved for every day folk who go above and beyond to help those less fortunate.

ND, superstitious or not, why do it? It's just pathetic. He's not 13 years old.

It seems facetiousness passes some people by. Yes I completely agree, to win a national award of honour for what equates to the square route of nought just makes a mockery of anyone who has been awarded one for a true just cause.

What is the point and purpose of handing out the highest possible civilian honour to people who have still not achieved the highest possible level they could achieve? Is it already over for Kane and Southgate? Why not wait until they're done with it and then judge the entire body of work? And what happens to the people who were already in line from previous years and decades?

If he swore on his daughters life then maybe it did brush his shirt. Let's be honest it is hard to say for 100% that he didn't. Doesn't look it from all angles but then again Kim kardashian looks very different from different angles. I believe him.

He ain't my favourite player nor do I particularly hate him. He won the golden boot and took England as far in a world Cup as we have been for years. The honours don't bother me either way, ridiculous tradition but if you are going to give one to a sports person it has to be kane I guess. Or Ronnie but that'll never happen (although with his dad being a killer, he would probably make an adequate knight)

if we had won the ucl and Jordan captained England he would probably be getting one and we'd be chuffed for him I guess.

Declan Rice looks looks a decent player.

Can’t believe some of these honours being dished out!

Agree with WY, these things should be awarded (if they really have been deserved) after a sporting career has finished. It’s a little unbecoming to see our MBE’s spitting and swearing and whatever else may lie ahead in their playing career.
