Ed001, I have a question for you if I may?
How good was Ian rush?
His goal scoring speaks for itself but he is never really mentioned when it comes to favourite players or best players people have seen.
A lot of videos I have seen of him, he seems to be charging thought the defence and finishing well, was that his game? Great finisher with good pace?
Thanks for any input!

{Ed001's Note - Rush was simply world class. When he was at Juventus, they used to say that having him was like having a Ferrari with no engine, as he was brilliant but the team around him was nowhere near his level. He was far more than a pacey finisher. He was the first line of defence, stopping opposition teams from playing out from the back as he would be running around giving them no time on the ball. The timing of his runs was superb as well, unlike say Inzaghi, who would make 50 runs in the hope of getting one right, Rush would make 50 runs and almost always stay onside.

The reason why no one mentions him as the best is that he played alongside the greatest player the club has ever had - Kenny Dalglish. He was so good that no one could compare.}

My dad is a massive Ian Rush fan. Says he's the best striker he's ever seen play football.

{Ed001's Note - can't argue with that.}

Thanks ed! That’s what confuses me a little, people pick their best teams in memory and it’s always Torres, suarez up front. he just seemed like the complete package!

{Ed001's Note - he was a long way ahead of the likes of Torres for me, but it is difficult to compare them as they are totally different players.}

Firmane, its also got a lot to do with age. A lot of people on this site are in their early 30s, 20s or younger so in their time its been players like Torres, Suarez, maybe Owen and Fowler.

I'm in my 40s so although I din't get to see the best of Kenny (he was retiring/ taking up the player manager role when I started following) I still remember how fantastic Rush was! However, even for me in my dotage, the memories fade a bit over time!

I know some of the Eds were waxing lyrical about Elisha Scott vs Dixie Dean, but that's a little before my time!

I was always curious what happened there. Why was he ever sold to Juve then loaned back the same season, and after one season in Juve purchased back in Liverpool. What happened there?

It's a good job he drank lots of milk or he'd have been playing for Accrington Stanley.

That's interesting ED01 re your Ferrari comment, i was always under the impression that Rush failed to settle in Italy and him and his transfer was deemed somewhat of a failure?

{Ed001's Note - not according to Juve fans he wasn't. The team was a mess when he joined and he got absolutely no service.}

Rush’s greatest asset was his uncannot timing to beat the offside trap.
He’d run at about 80% pace almost vertically inside the back four and then suddenly veer and accelerate through a space between defenders to run onto a through ball.
It was almost genius and it’s a skill that seems to have gone these days.
I used to argue with a mate at work (in the 90s) about who was the best striker we’d seen, I’d say Rush and he’d say Greaves.

Been watching us since 1974 and Rushie is the best striker we've ever had in my time, can remember my grandad saying he was the best we've had and he started going to games in 1912.

I was a young Welsh lad in the 80s so rush and in fact Saunders were big favourites of mine. Though I can't remember much.
I do remember a quiz once, some one please correct me, but at the time of quiz, Ian rush had zero bookings in his career. Absolute goal machine.
Seems like a gent too.

Rush the best striker that I’ve seen live. As a 10yr old I was completely infatuated with his brilliance. Didn’t dig the tash much.
