Ed001, (or any others that would like to answer) have you ever played football to a reasonably high level? The reason I ask, is that you obviously have a good knowledge of the game tactically wise etc and it got me thinking about the question: do top managers have to have had a successful playing career? All these years and it made me tho k, I don't know if you've ever divulged much about a possible football career or experiences?

{Ed001's Note - I am almost blind without my glasses mate and can't wear contacts, so I could never make it as a player until way too late when Davids was given permission to wear the goggles in 1999. So no, I was never in a position to even attempt to do so. Wenger, Mourinho and a number of others never had a successful playing career but made it. It used to be that you had to be a professional player first but as Arrigo Sacchi said: “I never realised that to be a jockey you had to be a horse first.”}

Yeah I totally agree with that sentiment, as long as you understand the game and people. Interesting though. I love football but didn't really start playing it seriously until my mid to late 20's due to committing to cricket. I'm guessing Ed002 was and still is a demi God of an athlete.

{Ed001's Note - Ed002 doesn't need to run, he has serfs to carry him on a palanquin everywhere he needs to go.}

Along the same lines, I read an article about an American basketball coach named Gene Kady. He played American football at a high level, then was ask coach basketball when he was a teacher. He went on to be very successful at Purdue University in Basketball. Goes to show that good coaches are good coaches regardless of there background. Good man management and being able to understand and convey tactics seem to what makes a good coach or manager.

Sarris never played at a high level either.

“Ed002 doesn't need to run, he has serfs to carry him on a palanquin everywhere he needs to go. “😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 priceless Ed, great start to the morning 👍 Ed02 is probably sitting in a warm bath of asses milk right now before his daily pedicure.

{Ed002's Note - Ed002 is in an office in Israel and flying to England this afternoon. The WiFi on BA is now very good, so I can continue to check on you all.}

Obviously I wouldn't know about coaching at the top level, but I coached at a state level in Aus for years. What helped me hit the ground running so to speak, was that I previously played at the old National Soccer League level (felt like when I played sunday pub league back in Liverpool at times, ha) . It helped that I had the playing experience at a level equal to or higher than those I was coaching. It also gave me some degree of respect from the players (until they got to know me of course, then it went out the window) . Look at the like of Gerrard and Lampard, regardless of their coaching experience, they would have instantly had the respect of the players, i'd assume?
That said, it's only a way in, you still have to have the nouse to know tactics etc.

Semi pro in SA and represented my province, the Western Cape. Yet Edd001 still has double the football knowledge I have when reading the game. Its weird how little Alan Shearer and Owen knows about football tactics and they were arguably the top 10 strikers in the EPL era.

{Ed001's Note - playing and understanding it are different things mate. You only need to understand small amounts as a player, just the things that help you improve. As a coach you need to understand every players' role and how to get the best out of them etc.}

I think Ed1 is Klopp in disguise, in fact I'm convinced! You are too intelligent with football Ed, just admit it Jurgen!

{Ed001's Note - I don't have his charisma, nor can I speak German!}

You would say that Jurgen (Ed1) you're trying to cover it up mate ;) lol and I'm the real Salah hahaha.

On a serious note though, bravo mate your knowledge never fails to impress.

Whilst I'm here Ed, the other day I was meant to ask but I forgot, is there any age restriction on the sites? The reason I ask is because my 12 year old boy wants an account on here but I said I'd ask first, if he's too young its OK, just thought I'd ask first before getting him signed up.

{Ed001's Note - no, we deliberately try to keep it child friendly. It is meant to be open to all.}

In years to come, I can pretty much guarantee that some low-league team will give someone a shot on the basis of a sterling Football Manager game career, and they'll smash it.

I've had my CV ready since Championship Manager '95-'96!

Ah that's great, thanks Ed mate I'll get him an account sorted out, he'll be happy to know he can use the site. He's Liverpool through and through, taught him well ;) .

{Ed001's Note - good lad, glad he has some sense.}

12 year old lad joining the site, probably has more common sense than most posters here, me included! ;)

{Ed001's Note - it is a low bar to be fair.}

Hope you had a safe trip Ed02, how are the asses milk bathing facilities on BA now days? 😜.

{Ed002's Note - BA are very good although the service yeaterday was not up to scratch.}
