Hi Ed001 how good is Gomez getting. Under the tuition of VVD he is becoming a Rolls Royce defender. Although there are instances when he gets out of position he has the speed and the savvy to get out of the rubbish. twice yesterday he found himself on the wrong side and twice he realised and calmly took the player out before any danger, put his arms up to the Ref and got away with it. Chelsea's Ivanovic had done this for years with Chelsea with great success.
That is what I was Gini didn't do on Wednesday and we all know what happened next.

So your evidence for him being a good player is that he gets out of position and then performs fouls to get him out of the mistake?!

That sounds an awful lot like Moreno who I’m sure you would not say is a “Rolls Royce defender”.

OP, Gomez still has a lot to learn and so does VVD. The chance Sessegnon had was a combination of VVD allowing Mitrovic to head the ball uncontested and Gomez astonishingly, fell asleep and let the ball go thru his legs. He also let Mitrovic bully him at times and let him overpower him when goal- kicks came his way. Also, VVD still has his laisser-faire attitude and Gomez can also lose concentration or get caught under diagonals. Don't get me wrong, Gomez is the real deal and so is VVD but let us not be blindd by how well they may be playing cos both have issues they need to iron out esp. Gomez who is still learning the game at the highest level.

Guys Im not saying Gomez is anywhere near the finished article, what I am saying for a young 21 year old kid playing in one of the most difficult positions he is showing great promise. Most of the best Center backs in the world did not shine until their mid late 20s. Being bullied buy an experience journeyman like Mitrovic is nothing to be ashamed about for a young lad in his first season at CB, and for the majority of the game he had him in his pocket. Its all experience for the young lad. What is more important is his constant improvement, its easy to pick holes in the young mans game, but for me I would not swap him for any defender in the prem at the moment.
For the comment comparing Gomez to Moreno, wow, the point im making he is showing great maturity for a young lad, even learning the dark arts of defending, just watch Sergio Ramos, John Terry and the likes they all have it.

Evered, I agree with you on Gomez overall and take this from a guy who rates him quite highly from jump and in spite of his mistakes cos to me, he is too talented to not develop him cos his up side is tremendous. I was only mentioning the parts of his game he need to improve upon.

Whether Mitrovic bullying him is nothing to be ashamed of, is a question of of opinion and I don't think Mitrovic is anything special cos Gomez has shut down strikers way better than him like Kane, Aubameyang etc.

All in all, Gomez is the real deal and I'd rather give him the time he needs to develop fully to minimize his mistakes and shortcomings instead of bigging him up every time he has a good game or a series of good games cos regardless of what we both think, he is still learning the game at this level.

I’m not comparing him to Moreno, you’ve missed the point.
I’m saying that what you said (gets out of position and then has to make fouls) sounds like a description of Moreno.

He has the potential to be top class, but he has a lot to work on and saying he fouls people is not and never will be a good thing. He should be in the right position in the first place.
