A question for Benny or Ed001, Southampton’s ‘offside’ goal yesterday. What’s your opinion on it? For me Yoshida is in an offside position and the keeper stutters because he thinks yoshida is going to get a touch, but everyone else seems to say it was a legitimate goal.

I wish they would tidy the rule up and if your offside your offside, there would be occasions where it would be harsh but it’s too much of a grey area for me.

{Ed001's Note - according to the laws as they stand, it was a perfectly good goal from what I saw.}

This is the trouble with the offside rule, there are too many grey areas now. I don’t like the rule where if it’s played back by an opposition player your not offside because the referees are interpreting deflections off defenders as an attempt to play the ball one week and allowing a goal then interpretating it the complete opposite way the next. That Southampton goal stands 9 times out of 10 for me.

That's the problem, it's all how someone interprets it. On first view I thought legitimate goal on second/ third I thought the keeper stuttered in his movement due to yoshida's position and therefore effecting play and subsequently offside. Offside should just be black and white for me.
Even the phase rule doesn't make sense to me as my argument is by being offside in the first phase they have gained a few yards to be inside in the second.

That particular decision is irrelevant in my opinion. Hughes slams the officials saying all he asks that they get the game changing decisions correct. Yet he conveniently forgets about the stonewall pen Bertrand should have given away and had a second yellow card.

From behind the goal you can see that Yoshida is not in the eye line of the keeper, so it should be a goal.

From the position of the linesman, it’s hard to tell if he is in his eye line or not, due to being side on, so you can see why he flagged.

Watford should also have had a peno as 87red says, so on balance a draw is probably fair.
