Hi eds

Hope all is well.

Random question but it has been on my mind for like 10 years hahaha.

Have the powers that be ever considered revising the point system to have 2 draws equal a win? (E. g have 4 points for a win and 2 for a draw or 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw) I know 10 years ago when the 08/ 09 team lost out on the league due to all those draws I thought the point system was unfair. Chelsea also probably think it's unfair to be unbeaten but be level on points with 2 teams who have lost 2 games each.

I don't mind the current system as it provides an incentive to go for the win but I always wonder if it has been considered to change it?

Thanks in advance Eds!

{Ed002's Note - Yes, that is how it used to be until 1980. 1 point for a draw and 2 for a win (so two draws equalled a win). It was changed to 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw to give teams an extra insentive to win games. As such it won't be going back to the old system. Other nations took different approaches with several counties adopting a system where there would be no draws (the early days of the MLS for example) and there would be penalties taken to decide results. FIFA has considered this for the World Cup group stages to avoid strategic draws as well. But for the Premier League they won't change the basic points system but they have raised before having a potential bonus point based on goals scored - but I doubt that will be raised again.}

Was it Jimmy Hill who introduced this system in 1980 or did he just suggest it?

Mourinho’s teams would be back winning leagues if they give more points for a draw. That’s what he sets his teams up for.

{Ed002's Note - In answer to the previous post, it was indeed Jimmy Hill who came up with the proposal.}

A bonus point for goals scored could actually work, in terms of making it more viewer friendly. But as things stand, City would run away with the league even more so as they just look at the ball and it goes in the goal at times. lol.

Or maybe 3 for a win, 2 for a score draw, and 1 for a no-score draw would prevent teams setting up for a 0-0 at least?
