What’s everyone’s thoughts on Ronald Koemans comments saying VVD cann seem a bit too laid back.

I know he was a bit last season but I do think it’s harsh of him to say that as he has got much better this season.

As much as I would like to dismiss koemans comment as he has failed at most clubs he's been manager of, Ed 1 did hint earlier this year that VVD can be a bit laid back and rely on his speed to get him out of trouble at times so he foes have it in his game. In fairness I can see the point being made but his mistakes are few and far between and I believe he is more focused these days and it was refreshing at the weekend to hear a player admit it was a definite penalty and a stupid mistake on his part. You can only learn from your mistakes if you first admit to them.

He must be watching a different player to me if he's saying stuff like that mate.

VVD is the best defender in the league and there is no second opinion. Koeman was managing dross at Everton and he is not even a half decent manager to judge VVD in the first place!

There were certain moments like that last season though as the season went on, he improved. I think he’s become a special player with a good attitude. I also think he might get better.

It's funny that Koeman is saying that, because if I remember correctly, he was exactly the same as a player. Not necessarily as laid back as VVD, but always appeared to be slow and methodical in movement. I agree VVD's speed (those long strides) does bail him out often, but then it's part of his skill set. Live with it.

{Ed001's Note - why live with it? The start of this season has shown how much better he is when he is not laid back and against Napoli he showed how poor he is when he is laid back. He needs to be told and to keep him playing like he started the season, rather than like he did against Napoli.}

He can definitely be too laid back and switch off sometimes, but with his physical and technical abilities, he usually manages to get out of any troubles he has caused himself. However, I do feel that he has improved on this aspect this season and has firmly established himself as one of the best defenders in the league, if not the world.

I think a number of clubs scouted him at Celtic and Arsenal reportedly chose not to sign him because of his "calm" manner.
If I could compare him to a boxer, I would say Roy Jones Jr. The physical abilities are there to cover his mistakes, but what happens when he there is a degradation of those abilities?

Rio Ferdinand was like that but still an excellent defender.

You know what they say about people in glass houses young Ronald 🤨.

I heard people in glass houses sink ships.

Why is everyone having a go at Koeman, exactly? Ed, myself and many others have been echoing the same thing for a year now about how too laid back VVD is. I don't care if the source of the comments are from Koeman or even Moyes cos it's not about who made them. The issue here is that are the comments credible and as much as people want to play the "What does he know? He managed poor defenders like Keane, Jags, and Ashley Williams"", what he said is correct.

Many of us said even before he signed that he has near NO weaknesses in his game BUT that he is a stroller on the pitch, too laid back and switches off fair few times. Koeman being a por manager does not remove from that truth even tho VVD is improving on these fronts. After all, two things can be correct at the same time.

You must be the only one complaining about VVD. Put him in the market you ll see a host of clubs including Barca, City, UTD and everyone in Europe after him for “ Name your price “. He is a leader, A captain and arguably the best ball playing defender in mainland Europe!
When he has a bad game, the entire team has a bad game. Look at the improvement on Gomez!

BRover - You May agree with Koeman but that does not make him factually correct, I think Kidman is wrong and his comments smack of rank hypocrisy as he was one of the most unfocused defenders of his generation.

He got away with being a poor defender (ask Graham Taylor RIP) by being devastating at free kicks (ask GT)

Ron, here is where you are wrong. First off, this is not about facts. It's about opinions. Now, Koeman never compared himself to VVD except if I missed that. You and many others did, which has NOTHING to do with the debate. There is nothing hypocritical about what he said. He gave an opinion that many of us here (myself, MK Scouser and Ed01) STILL share and this, WAY before he signed here so cos Koeman said it means NOTHING and does not mean he is wrong.

You can say a player was poor AND still say he gave a good assessment of another player currently playing in the position said player played in. It's called "nuance". This is not about Koeman or his playing career. This is about an inherent flaw in VVD's game that is salient and has been before he even signed here.

Harry, none of what you say is true. Before VVD signed for us, myself, MK Scouser, Ed01 and many others, raised the very issue) (s) that Koeman raised about VVD's game WAY before we signed him so you are patently false in saying I am the only one who has this opinion. Hence, all the other stuff you posted has NOTHING to do with VVD's inherent flaws, as if spending 75m on a player makes his flaws automatically go away. "When he has a bad game, everyone has a bad game". Again, patently false. VVD was crap vs Leicester this season (Gomez outplayed him and bailed him out a couple of times) and we still won so clearly again, a tonne of hot air in your posts. You prolly want to watch the games with your eyes and mind open and alert before making such blanket and baseless statements.

I seem to remember certain posters also had scathing opinions of Robertson and Shaquiri before they played for us too. Your opinions are no more valid than mine or Harry’s.

Koeman is a hypocrit, he was very poor at concentrating. I don’t care how good/ poor a manager he is, his comments are hypocritical.

If he is a poor player then we should sell him.

I think Koeman needs to chill out. But I also think that peno should wake Virgil up a bit going forward.

Ron, you seem to be deflecting for no reason. You seem to want to attack Koeman personally and football-wise instead of listening to what he actually said, which many of us said he has even before he signed for us. In terms of a career, VVD will do well to have the type of career Koeman had with the trophies to boot (poor player or not) so there's that. Also, I see that you conveniently bypassed that point and failed to address it. No prob, I would deflect too if I could not address the main point of a debate.

Harry, do you even read? Who said VVD is poor and should be sold? Nobody said so. So us pointing out his flaws means he is a poor player and needs to be sold? Again, do you even read what people post? VVD has his flaws and needs to improve in certain areas or do you think he is perfect?
