Ed2, SF proper hometown or outside of? I spent a few years just north of Ben Lomond on Hwy 9. Lived amongst the redwoods. Miss it terribly tbh.

{Ed002's Note - I was born in Bellevue, WA (near Seattle) but lived in the Bay Area from the age of 4 for 20 years. As a child in San Mateo and San Francisco then I went to college in Berkeley. I had a friend who lived in Scotts Valley which is near Ben Lomand.}

{Ed002's Note - John's Grill on Ellis Street. It is the restaurant from The Maltese Falcon.}

Ed01, I did not know you were a yank. You don't sound like one. Nice college dude, impressed.

{Ed002's Note - I am not a "yank" - perhaps you should look that up.}

We’re simple people in the UK ed, all Americans are yanks to us not just the traditional unionists. Would you not be a yank though with where you grew up? My civil war knowledge is not great though.

{Ed002's Note - The Civil War was fought on the Eastern side of the United States NYR, not at all in the much nicer West. The term "yank" or more specifically "Yankee" is a term used by the Southerners to describe the Unionists, or more specifically those from New England (Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Hampshire etc.). I would just be a plain Californian - although I have lived the vast majority of my life away from the United States.}

Ed002,

Are you a dead head? I got the Jerry reference the other day, and was proud to say that the first live show I ever saw was the Grateful Dead in Pittsburgh in the Summer of 1995.One of Jerry Garcia last show. That was a life experience. Wish you well
Cheers
Matt in FL.

{Ed002's Note - I am indeed a Dead Head and I think I first saw the band at the Carousel Ballroom (Filmore West) in March 1971. I last saw them was in Seattle in June 1994 the day after the Nicole Brown Simpson murder. I did see Dead & Co in Mountain View last summer and we kept going to the NYE shows until 4 or 5 years ago, but my real fondness is for Country Joe and The Fish.}

I bow to your superior knowledge of the civil war ed. I thought California and some of the western states sent solidiers to fight alongside the unionists so would also be Yanks too.

{Ed002's Note - There were soldiers from all over but the Yanks are from the North East.}

I stayed in a hostel on Ellis street about 13 years ago where Ellis meets Larkin street. Great hostel but one hell of a sketchy area, not sure if it has changed since but i have memories, some fond and some not so! Love San Fran as a whole though.

{Ed002's Note - That is the Tenderloin heading up close to Polk Gulch. They are not good areas I am afraid. Please never refer to it as "San Fran" or "Frisco" - locals don't like it. San Francisco or The City.}
