Agree with that, Gini and all unfortunately.
I’m still not sure what Shaqiri brings as a substitute for Salah, when you’re 1-2 up away from home and looking to hit with pace on the counter?
As a playmaker, yes, he’s got the skills.
But as a wide man?

Bang on the money Ed001 with that review. Bringing Matip on and changing the defence with minutes to go is a pointless exercise. At least he didn't do it on a corner this week.

{Ed001's Note - good point.}

Thanks Ed, great read.

I can kind of see Klopp's logic with the Matip substition (presumably because he offers more height than TAA for the long balls late on), but I agree that it just doesn't work in practice. Hopefully this is something Klopp and Co will realize when analyzing the performances, or maybe it will disappear with the return of Lovren?

I was also impressed with Alisson's response after making the error. Didn't seem to make him at all nervous, really think he could be the missing piece of the puzzle, especially if he is as resilient as he appears. I think we really need cool heads if we want to mount a serious challenge for the league this year.

{Ed001's Note - but they had no height to trouble us with balls whipped in to the box, except for their defenders on a set piece when Matip is not picking one of them up!}

Great review Ed1, I agree especially about Wijnaldum, he wasn't good enough at all, I'd hoped we'd of seen Hendo, Keita and Milner in the middle for that game but beggars can't be choosers. We won and that's the only thing I'm really bothered about but I want to see both Keita and Hendo starting against Spurs.

{Ed001's Note - he had a great first game but has been getting worse since. Worries me that he is still getting picked while Keita got dropped for his poor performance. How do the match analysts not see how bad his runs are? He runs into hiding at times. Are they actually analysing the games or the stats? Gini rarely gives the ball away, but he rarely puts himself into any kind of position to do anything with it either.}

Thanks Ed01 for the review.

I fully agree on Gini part. Thought it was best to sub him than Henderson. Or maybe sub both him and Henderson instead of Salah.

Juicer, a bit disagree with you on Shaqiri. I thought he's more of a wide man than a playmaker. I remembered watching him playing there more than centrally.

{Ed001's Note - he can play both Haizan. His best games for Stoke were from the centre.}

Great review as per ed, but please these breast enlargement slide shows and such. Keep clicking on them accidentally, the missus gives out enough about me been online, if she was to see me history?

{Ed001's Note - I have no idea what you are talking about, but you do realise the ads you see are related to your search history right? Ed025 just sees ads for fast food and alcohol. Ed003 sees lots of ads for anti wrinkle cream. Ed033 sees lots of ads for tin foil and Ed0333, well it is best you don't know what ads he gets!}

good read ed. I too thought that Gini would come out instead of Henderson, but at the time I thought that it was to protect Henderson for the long season. I would not be surprised to see Henderson and Keita start against Spurs though. I thought that Shaqiri did okay for the time he was in and I think that he will be a very important player for us as the year goes on. I really like our depth this year and am more comfortable/ confident than in years past. If we are still on top at the end of September, watch out.

{Ed001's Note - cheers mate.}

Thanks ed, great review as always. Matip frustrates me but Klopp frustrates me more by sticking with with him and bringing him on with so little time to play seemed a strange choice.

{Ed001's Note - it is almost like he is keeping him sweet after selling Klavan and not offloading him instead.}

Agree with it all ed. I thought Virgil looked nervous or something. Keeping a clean sheet maybe? I don't no but that's what I think.

{Ed001's Note - I don't know what was up with him either. I get he has been getting caught out positionally at times and using his physicality to rescue things, but that wasn't the issue in this game. This was something different. Like I said though, he is allowed an off game, he is human after all, though he is like the baddie in the film Cyborg at times and doesn't seem it.}

Thanks Ed01.

Watched few games prior his move to the club, but I have to admit that most of the games I didn't watch them entirely. During those bits I saw him more on the flanks.

Thanks to you as well Juicer. Now I know more about him. :-)

{Ed001's Note - I would say he was best in a free role, he actually stood out for Stoke when Hughes was forced to play him there due to injuries. He does play more often from the right though.}

That's what concerns me about him Ed1, he's far too inconsistent, he'll have 1 good game out of 5, this isn't good enough for this level. I really don't understand how he was picked ahead of Keita, it makes zero sense to me.

It's quite frustrating to be honest because we know he has the quality but he can't keep it up and that may have been good enough a few years ago but not anymore it's not. Don't get me wrong I like the lad and won't suggest otherwise but he needs to up his game on a regular basis or be benched, you simply can't have him ahead of Keita or Hendo on them kind of performances.

{Ed001's Note - agreed.}

Gomez picking up a lot of praise this weekend, hope he can keep it up! And surely the long throw in thing is something our new throw in coach has identified Ed001?

{Ed001's Note - well the throw in coach has stated quite categorically that he is not at Liverpool to work on long throws, so it is probably just incidental that they discovered Gomez has a long throw when working with him. Either that or Gomez just never bothered using it before because the players were not getting themselves into a position to receive it. One of the things the coach is meant to work on is players' movement to get into position to receive a throw.}

No worries Haizan.
Ed001 knows I have a prejudice against players that can’t run like greased lightning.
I don’t mind Shaqiri actually but I’d have loved another proper pace man as the Mane / Salah alternative. Cheers.

{Ed001's Note - I do agree at that point in the game it invited more pressure on but Salah was looking a little leggy and he maybe he needed to come off.}

Why sign himz where we all believe he is to cover Salah.

Play him in the ten

Let him score an overhead kick against United

And then never play him there again 🤣

Its mental.

Great review as always, Ed. VVD had a shocker and all his flaws came out for the world to see in just one game, which is troubling BUT no more than that. Well, Mane had a stinker vs BHA where he put every foot wrong. What happened next? Mane came back vs LC and had a very solid game, best player on the pitch, IMO. VVD has a LOT of work to do to live up to the hype around him BUT he is allowed a stinker once in a while. The hope is that he will bounce back vs Spurs where unlike vs LC, he will actually have someone to mark in Kane, as Ed noticed. As for Wiji, he needs to up his game esp. on the road cos we will NOT win a sausage this season by playing 10 men vs 11 away from home when Wiji plays. Up Da Pool!

Cheers Ed good review although I thought you went easy on Bobby.
I love the man but for me he was the main reason we got penned back in the second half. He just kept losing possession.
We can normally rely on him to keep the ball in tight spaces, lay it off to Salah/ Mane after he’s drawn players to him but he just seemed to not have a clue what to do with it once in possession then he gave possession away without his normal grit and determination.
I’m sure it’s a fitness thing but I can’t wait to see the real Bobby Firmino again!

{Ed001's Note - I don't think that is fair, he was having the same problem as the rest of the team in that he was lacking options. We got penned in and players were not getting out quickly enough to help out Firmino.}

Ed01, have you thought about adding a mark out of ten to the manager and players as part of your review, I'd personally like to see it not sure about everyone else though.
Thanks.

{Ed001's Note - I hadn't thought about it, but I could do it if people want that.}

Great review ed01, good points although I did worry about the performance as the game went on. We just seemed to forget to play and gave up silly possession.

Alisson apart for the silly turn, played a great game I thought and cleaned up anything coming at him. I remember a corner which he caught out in mid air which if it was Karius or mig, that would have been punched or scuffed. So confidence does come from him and I think it shows.

VVD just had a poor day. Luckily as klopp mentioned it was on a day we won. So it is fine and Gomez was on it, so it helped.

Gini was terrible, there was a time he completely lost the ball at his feet. Got caught out and it lead to a shot, it was off target but still his error led to this. I dunno why he always gets in, I do wonder if it’s klopp putting him in the window for other to look at or check the player happy. Is strange though as the window has closed now though. So no sure but in the 2nd half, we couldn’t string passes together hendo was looking for a pass as Leicester started to push and pressure us and he was no where to be seen, didn’t give an option and we couldn’t get out. Milner was running around but the support was just not there and they were all on different wave lengths. TAA had a similar situation and couldn’t get out so ended up conceding possession as no option was given to him.

Mane I think is really coming into his own. Does so much work on and off the ball and tracks back so well. A really strong guy and uses his pace well to win the ball back. Firmino was off, his touch was off and abit of the pace but hopefully that will come with time, I’m a huge fan of his so hope his performances start to come together with the sharpness and intelligent runs he makes. But he just looked a little off. Salah was fairly quiet but always a threat. I thought he looked a little tired.
Subs have been mentioned. Keita came into a disjointed midfield and replaced the one trying to organise it. Shaqiri I think did ok, offering some threat and holding up the ball in the dying stage of the game. Just good hold up and what is needed to grind out the win. Matip, well he’s just useless really so we got lucky with that at the end. But it’s great to play like we did and no where near the electric pace we can do and still get these wins. Really is what’s needed.

The defence is looking more solid and there is always goals in that team so we are addressing the issue the club has. Keep this up and we can start believing.

You think so Ed? To me it looked like every time he got the ball he was looking at his feet waiting to be tackled. I’m not having a pop at him he’s a great player I just thought it was his worst performance of the season to date and we struggled to get control of the ball because of it.
On a separate point do you think Salah is just trying too hard right now?
The first miss can happen but the second one when he should’ve just laid it into Firmino for a tap in instead of trying to work a shooting chance was indicative of how I think he’s started the season.
He just needs to play his game and forget trying to emulate what he did last year. The goals will come.

{Ed001's Note - I think you need to watch it again mate. Salah just looks lacking in sharpness. It took him a while to get going last season as well.}

I will mate.
At the end of the day we won and we can play a hell of a lot better so all is good.
I do worry when we play Puel’s teams it’s funny how a manager can just have an Indian sign over you so I was just glad to get the points in the end.

I think your comment on Van Djik was 100% right - he thrives on being a stopper using his physical attributes to block and mark attackers out of the game and while he can adapt to an extent, when there was literally no-one to mark against and he had to rely 100% on reading the game and being in a useful position he went to pieces. I think that's something we will rarely see but potentially when playing against the likes of Bournemouth who often play an our of position winger up front in the later stages of games.
