He was lined up as a striking partner for Kevin Keegan at one point and even went so far as to have a medical at Liverpool.
Apparently his blood pressure was showing as too high, so they sent him off on a holiday to Spain for a couple of weeks R&R.
Came back and tested him again and his BP was even higher, lmao.
Too much sun, sea and sangria!
Although Tommy Smith tells a slightly different tale, haha.

I've a couple for you Ed001.

How about Robin Friday? - he sounds a real character.

Plus, if he's not on there already, I'd love to see you do a piece on my favourite LFC player: Steve McManaman.

I'm sure you already know tons about him, so I doubt an awful lot of research would be required.

{Ed001's Note - Friday was on there but Macca wasn't. What I know of Macca would not make for a particularly good article so I will still have to do a lot of research!}

Did you personally rate him, Ed001?

He was always my favourite player throughout his time at LFC. Those goals he scored against Celtic and Villa (around a week apart, if I recall correctly) where he just dribbled around their entire team blew me away. I was absolutely gutted when he left for Real.

Probably Englands most successful export, too.

{Ed001's Note - he had incredible natural ability and stamina but also a tendency to run into blind alleys and a lack of intelligence. When man marked he was lost, he didn't have the sense to get himself free or to use it to upset the opposition's set up. If you can't get free, run the marker into places they don't want him to be, ie on top of opposing defenders so they are in each other's way. It is not difficult just requires a little bit of sense, which he didn't have. Also he became a bit of a blert after a couple of player of the year awards and got way too big for his boots.}

Nail on head there Ed001, if Steve Mc was allowed run free he was very good but too often he turned into a headless chicken. Lovely hair though.

{Ed001's Note - he liked to leave it to flow free while he drove his convertible round Bootle. It was like he was auditioning for an advert for conditioner....}

I watched Macca every home game in the Kop. He had a lot of skill but used to drive the fans mad by always beating a player then stoping almost so he could show off and beat them again by which time their defenders were always back in place.

Needed to learn from Barnes to beat the man then whip in a quality cross or shot.

He was part of the Spice Boys that all loved their hair!

I sense a bit of Macca bashing here but he was one of our better players in that era when we were mostly crap and, I think, is still the most successful English player to play for a foreign team. Also recall he was praised highly during his time at Real for staying to fight for a place in the team when they kept buying players to replace him. Cracking player for me - had his flaws but always exciting to watch.
