Sorry if it's been covered, but I scrolled down to check and got bored reading all the happy birthday wishes for Tris.
Anyway, I know it's only one game, but I was really impressed with Shaqiri's debut. I was one who thought he was an unnecessary buy and could stop the development and opportunities of some youth. His movement and link up play was excellent. We won't mention the right footed effort just before his goal, but what a nice way to open your account with the club, even if just in a friendly. Those of you with more tactical nouse than me may be able to comment on the role he played. Was it an attacking mid or what? I see he was even picking the ball up off the CB at one stage. Is this normal for him or are the staff trying to develop him for our system?

I thought he was playing the Coutinho role as an attacking midfielder, just behind the attack. He was also dropping back to receive the ball as you say.

Jurgen said in the post match interview that given Shaqiri had not really trained much with the club he give him a completely 'free role', to do what he wanted where he wanted. Which is why he was roaming about the pitch wherever he saw pockets of space. I wouldn't expect this to become his role in general. I think he will play on the right wing or potentially as number 8 depending on form/ injuries/ number of matches.

Why do people keep mentioning the 'coutinho' role? coutinho mainly played from the left and rarely played behind the striker.

When I mention the "Coutinho role" I'm talking about the later stages of his Liverpool career when he played behind the front 3.

Seeing the role played by shaqiri the other night and seeing as how we signed him after the fekir deal fell through I think he has been bought as a fekir alternative.
He can play in midfield, behind the forwards or he can play as the forward or winger. I'm more excited about shaqiri than I ever thought I would be. He is a winner, he's won tonnes of medals and I think he's going to help us win the league this year.
