Everton fan in peace here - interested in hearing your perspectives on expectations for this season as having a debate with my red mates.

What do you expect from this season? View from outside is that you have spent 250mil+ in the last 2 windows, with most expensive GK and DF in the world and Klopp has now spent almost half a billion £ - and granted you have a very strong squad and some of your business has been excellent.

But with this much money spent and this squad, my view is that you should be expecting to win the league and that you should be disappointed with 2nd. I think pressure is on Klopp more than ever before in his career and anything other than top 2 and fighting for the title until the last week of the season would amount to failure.

Interested in hearing expectations for the season?

Good afternoon fellow liverpool person ;)

I think the expectation is to challenge for the title, and a minimum of one trophy.

Whilst we have spent that much it is part due to the fact we have had to replace big names over the years. So whilst our spending is that much it is being offset but a fairly large proportion. i believe it works out under 50m a year.

It is easy to say with the amount we have spent we SHOULD win things, but let's not forget that united have spent 500m on their squad, city have spent the same so they both have very very strong squads.

I think this years league is going to be one of the most interesting seasons in a long time.

As i don't like to say it i think you, west ham and wolves are going to be the surprise packages this season pushing chelsea and arsenal for europa league places!

good luck in your season and may the odds be never in your favour :)

viva liverpool!

I don't think there's more pressure toffee. We showed last season what a team we've got, now imagine that team of reds with a world class goalie behind them.

Unfortunately mate our rivals have been spending that kind of money consistently over a number of year's. But i get you're point, and obviously Klopp will be thinking he finally has the kind of squad to go challenge. Will still be very difficult as you only need to look at City spending £60m on guys like Laporte and Mahrez who both could find themselves on the bench often! As opposed to Van dijk and Alisson are definite starters in our squad.

It's a very naive way of looking at things to say "Liverpool have signed 4 expensive players in the last 12 months and should therefore win the title"

Until as recently as last summer our transfer record was still Andy Carroll, signed in 2012. Van Dijk, Alisson, Keita and Fabinho are the only 4 players we've signed (according to the reported figures) who've cost more than £40m.

United and City have been paying that kind of money for nearly 6 seasons now. Liverpool had a great Champions League run and sold Coutinho for big money so we are finally in a position to compete financially, temporarily. Make no mistake though, we're still playing catch up. Player for player, they still spend far more money on their squads.

We may have spent big in the last 12 months but that doesn't equalise the Manchester clubs spending close to £2billion in the last decade. They've had players on their benches for the last 5 years who would've broken our transfer record.

With the spine Liverpool have though, we have to be challenging now. Not because of the money spent, but because of the quality acquired. We have no God given right to finish 1st. We've spent about £180m this summer but Chelsea, Man Utd and Man City will all surpass that by the time the window shuts in my opinion.

It's Klopp's 3rd full season. I want silverware. At this moment, I want the title. But realistically I'll happily take a legitimate title challenge and a cup win. For me though, we have to win the title in the next 3 seasons now. Otherwise It's a failure and Klopp will leave as a disappointment who flattered to deceive.

I last expected Liverpool to win the title/ CL in 2008/ 09. I've learned to hope more than expect us to win anything. That being said, I hope we compete strongly for the title. And I hope we win a trophy. I think Klopp will be expected to win something.

The pressure will be on Klopp to win, especially from outside the club. It won't come from me though. The only expectation I have is that we play good, exciting football that hopefully leads to more trophies.

Paul Tomkins did some nice research showing that the best predictor of league finishing position is the team value averaged over the season, allowing for transfer price inflation. For Liverpool this is expected to be well under £500M even after recent purchases; whereas for ManU and City their equivalent values will be more like £600-700M, having spent massively over many years.
The recent spending should take us over Chelsea and Arsenal, but still 20-30% less than the two manc teams.
So, for sure the pressure is on Klopp but in reality it will be tough again, I do agree that we need to be competing until the very end this time.

All this nonsense about title challenge, we have a squad to win it now and will be bitterly disappointed if after decades of flattering to decieve that we don't go out and take the bull by the horns and get no 19.

Sorry to be so blunt but this heavy investment is not so we can be also rans yet again.

A cup would be icing on the cake but even a champions league win would not be enough for me if we don't win the title.

Spot on, MK. We are in a position to challenge now not cos of the money spent BUT due to the quality we have now. Look at Rafa and BR. Rafa spent a boat load on players and frankly, we were a two man team in Torres and Gerrard. BR spent 300m in his tenure and we wer pretty much a one-man team in Suarez. That is not the case here.

Now, we have spent big money BUT we have sold for good money and spent wisely overall as well, not the case under Rafa and BR. Now we are in a position to challenge for the next 3 years so the hope now, is that we win the PL within this span, starting with at least a trophy this coming season and a top 4 finish.
