I know this won't be a popular opinion but I would rather go into next season with Karius and Ward as our GKs than splash a penny more than 30 million for Alisson. He looked good on Youtube but watching him for Roma against LFC and his performances for Brazil in the World Cup makes me believe he just had a handful of world class performances and people are jumping on the 'wrold class' bandwagon.
Not impressed with Alisson at all so far and I think Klopp will give Karius another go which I think is the right decision. Spout all the hatred you want at Karius, but the lad is better than most GKs (especially when asked to play a high line defense) and we will struggle to find anyone better fro a reasonable price. Please no to Butland, Pope etc.

{Ed001's Note - so a handful of games you have watched is enough to convince you that the people who watch him every week have been convinced by a handful of world class performances? You really have not thought this through have you?}

First of all, I don't think Alisson is world class by any stretch and I find it hard to believe that any one on this site has watched Roma play week in week out to have a solid opinion on his abilities. My sample size is around 10 games but just don't think he is worth all the fuss based on those 10 games. Karius has had some very good games as well and people want him gone just because of what happened in the UCL final. And most importantly, Alisson wants Real. Let them overpay for him. Even if he joins us, he will be clamouring for a move away to Spain in a few seasons anyways, so why all the bother?

{Ed001's Note - your sample size is a few YouTube clips and about 6 games you said a second ago. Now it is 10? I think I am just going to ignore this conversation, it is pointless. If people think they can judge on 10 games played with completely different teams, then they should be in scouting, as they know better than anyone else.}

I can see where both Indian and Ed are coming from. My concern is that the only games I have watched him in, the CL semis and the World Cup games, were big games. He hasn't looked great in these games and that's were really top draw keepers stand out, on the biggest stage when they have to be really switched on.
Let's face it, there were games last season when I could have been in goal for us, there was so little to do :) But, when it was really needed, Karius had a shocker I'm sad to say. I also think he had some great games to get us there in the first place though.
Back to the main point, were talking a world record fee for a keeper if Alisson was to come. Does anyone know if he's even interested?

{Ed001's Note - top keepers stand out by being consistently good over the course of a season and pulling off saves that normal keepers would never get to. They do not stand out in international duty, where they are working with defenders they don't know very well. Has no one learnt anything yet from all this judging of players in the World Cups? The attackers are the only ones who stand out as it rewards individual brilliance over teamwork.}

Despite not being impressed by Alisson against Serbia I’d be happy for us to buy him for £70-£80 million. He has to be an upgrade on Karius and it’s not my money.

I understand WC fever Ed, and I don't claim to have seen him much, it's just a massive amount of money, granted, not my money.
In agreement with you, let's not forget a few purchases after a youth world cup a few years back, Pongolle and LeTallec anyone?

{Ed001's Note - you can run through a huge list of players who looked great in World Cups but never the same for their clubs.}

Would you stick with Karius for the First XI, Ed001?
Or give Ward a shot, or what?
And I'm not trying to start a war here, lol.

{Ed001's Note - I have no idea as it would depend on how they perform in pre-season.}

Fair enough, yes.
An interesting watch for past Liverpool games - Newcastle away, 1971/ 72.
Supermac's debut, scored a hat-trick against us.
Late on Clemence takes a goal kick, miscues horribly, the ball spoons up with spin and goes about 35 yards.
It reaches MacDonald, who can't control the spin but races on to it anyway and beats Clemence to the ball just outside of the area. Clem comes tearing out, Supermac lobs the ball past him and then gets cleaned out Schumacher-style by the Liverpool keeper.
The ball misses the net, I don't think Clemence gets booked even, and Supermac has to be helped off concussed.
Now that's how to do a keeper howler, brilliant.

{Ed001's Note - but would you have signed him after seeing that? ;-)

Definitely not, bring back the Flying Pig I say haha.

{Ed001's Note - now there was a sweeper keeper!}

many years ago i was taken to watch Coventry v Stoke. A certain Gordon Banks was in goal and his mere presence between the sticks put the fear of god into the strikers, to the degree that Willie Carr, when presented with a penalty, misssed the goal by a good 2 yards. that's what we need now, a keeper that makes attackers feel they hve to find the corner!

Oh, and what about El Hadji Diouf after the WC? What a buy he turned out to be. I remember a few commentators stating he was the best transfer we'd ever done at the time.

Lev Yashin was blamed by his nation and the world for causing them to lose in the 62 quarter finals, he is still the only keeper to win the Balon D'Or and recognised as the greatest keeper of all time for his record not over one match or one tournament.

To be fair ed we got a good close up of all those saves he made in that cl semi f8nal he was apart of.

Made saves no other keeper would make for sure! Kept Roma well in. Worked with defenders he knew and was outstanding 🤣

Just taking the Mick mate. I know what your saying!

Quite enjoyed reading this convo on Alisson and keeper situation ed. Your not one that thinks Karius can improve overtime and become the keeper we need and Klopp wants then? I thought was no chance on Alisson, I guess until Madrid sign him there is always a slim chance.

{Ed001's Note - he may do but not with our coaches.}

Perfect example of this is Mexico GK sensational at most world cups i have seen him play Club level not very good.

I'm yet to be convinced on Allison myself. Mainly by him not dominating his area and how he seems to stay on his line on crosses.
However, if you'd never seen DeGea play for United and only watched him in this world cup you'd wonder was everyone else mad in the head for rating him.

I think you need a season to judge a player. You need to attend games. And when you've seen someone be shaky since they signed and then go throwing the ball to the opposition In a champions league final and blow it all for your team, club and it's fans, then it becomes fair to say, that Karius lad we've got in net is absolute garbage get him sold.

Of course you can't judge a player on 10 games but, you can usually spot a world class player from a mile off. Alison has never looked world class to me.

70 mil signings that fail can mean the end for the manager. It's too much to risk on a keeper. Oblak would be better but I think we will end up with butland and that's fine with me. We would be harder to beat we ith Jack in the sticks.
