Here's a question I've not heard posed before.

What liverpool player has been the best England player?

Ray clemence? Kevin Keegan? Micheal Owen even, he was pretty good for England.

I have no idea, in modern times it must be Owen or Gerrard. Clearly stevie was the better player but he didn't play as well with lampard and England as he did for Liverpool.

Peter Beardsley was pretty good for england.

Yes, depends on era.

Barnes wasn’t good for England that often but then how can you be when idiot fans abuse you all game.
Hughes was good for England. Keegan was very good. Clem had a lot of competition. Hunt with his World Cup win. Gerrard was a fantastic player.

So I think you can only really go by best in each era.

Got to be Michael Owen for me. There isn't really a lot of debate from my lifetime.

Stevie Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Steve McManaman, Rob Jones, Robbie Fowler etc weren't utilised effectively or enough. Glen Johnson, Chris Kirkland, Jamie Redknapp, Scott Carson, Emile Heskey, Jermaine Pennant, Stan Collymore, Danny Murphy, Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling, James Milner, Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne etc just weren't good enough to make a big impact.

I'm pretty sure Owen is in the top 5 all time goalscorers list, and he did it in about 4-6 years. If he hadn't had injuries, he's be up there in the 80's with Ronaldo.

Hendo, Ox, Gomez, Solanke, Brewster and Trent have a good chance to do well for their country. In fact, I'd happily back Trent to be captain for club and country one day.

Keegan was the English superstar player of his generation. And he also won Superstars, which for a kid growing up in the 70s will know it was the only sport related tV show worth watching.

Check out the Causio flick that took out half of the England team in a World Cup Qualifier, absolute class. Then a Bettaga bullet header to finish off one of the outstanding moves / goals of the 70s.
England were poor in the 1970s, when English club teams almost ruled European football. Very odd.
Roger Hunt, numero uno.
