Ugh I tried, I even started this post twice, but I just can't wish England good luck tonight. It's just not in me. I'm sorry folks. I'll go halfway and hope all fans out there stay safe and avoid any crowd troubles or Russian dramas. And may the tournament be kind to the Liverpool players in rich experiences and hopefully not too many injuries.

I created 4 fake accounts just to give you 5 thumbs down.

In all seriousness, I agree partially. I do want England to win and I will watch it, but I'm not massively nervous or excited. Feels like I'm gearing up to watch United vs West Brom. I'd prefer one specific team to win but I'm just hoping it won't be a boring game most of all.

You got a snarky response from me which the Eds decided not to post (apologies eds, I'm a bit run down and irritable, I shouldn't have posted) .

{Ed001's Note - no worries mate, I gathered which is why I just deleted it. We all need a filter at times.}

I’m Irish, so it’s a bit of banter so no problem Putney mate. Sure look, we got kicked off the park by a desperate danish squad so we aren’t even there. That might make you feel a bit less irritable.

Wanting your country and your team to win are not mutually exclusive. I would be far happier if Liverpool had won the Champions League last month than if England were to win the World Cup but it doesn't stop me being happy if England go on to win the World Cup even though Liverpool lost in Kiev.

Think of it like loving your wife / long term partner but still fancying the girl in Accounts. You can still dream about both :)

Don't get me wrong g1dgo, I always back the home nations. Even Scotland. Okay, maybe not Scotland.

If I'm honest I just support any one who has a Liverpool player. So Brazil for Firmino, England for Hendo/ Arnold, Senegal for Mane, Egypt for Salah, and Croatia for Lovren.

As long as none of those guys get injured and they all have a good tournament, I'm happy. If England can win it on top of that, perfect. I'd rather England go out in the group stages than see Firmino get injured though!

If England somehow did win it though, the party would be great. Also one of the people I'm contracting with at the moment is giving all staff Thursday afternoon off next week (including paying my fellow contractors and temps full wages for the afternoon) for the Belgium game and have committed to doing so far every England game on a week day. For that reason alone, I'm backing England.

Generally though, whilst I don't particularly mind either way and I'm just enjoying the summer football in general, I'd still prefer England to win than not win. Especially when we have players in the squad.

I'm with you aoe mate, I'll go the step further, I hope Tunisia smash England lol it may, just may bring the majority of them England players down a peg or two. Especially the likes of Kane who thinks he's gods gift.

11.) 18 Jun 2018
18 Jun 2018 16:34:50
Didn't realise you were Irish AOE, that changes everything, I'm all for a bit of international ribbing.

Anyway you guys need to find something to keep you busy whilst your team are on their holidays.

12.) 18 Jun 2018
18 Jun 2018 16:47:22
Tunisia ain't going to smash England and If you hate England so much maybe you shouldn't support an English team.

I LOVE Liverpool, to death. But I'd rather England won the world cup than anything. The buzz is amazing when the national team do well (apparently)

This is the world cup! Brazil and Germany etc, half of you sound like you'd rather watch Fulham v Watford!

{Ed001's Note - Scouse not English. I couldn't give a toss about England, they couldn't give a toss about the city of Liverpool when Thatcher was trying to destroy it, why should anyone from Liverpool give a toss about England?}

13.) 18 Jun 2018
18 Jun 2018 16:48:25
Even when they play they’re on the holidays. Sometimes that camaraderie gets us results. Sometimes it gets us hammered by a weak danish team.

14.) 18 Jun 2018
18 Jun 2018 16:59:00
Ed1, exactly my thoughts too.

I would much rather watch Fulham v Watford, you've got that right PH. It'd be much more entertaining than watching that dross. Every time you watch England play it's like watching grass grow.

15.) 18 Jun 2018
18 Jun 2018 17:02:32
Come on Ed, that was a long time ago and things have moved on. It wasn't only liverpool was it?

Reason for Liverpool fans to care about England, vice captain plays for Liverpool and young trent of course. I bet Jordan would prioritise the world cup over any domestic titles.

I'm not trying to pick a fight but I'm an England fan. I get aoe, being Irish, Liverpool is Dublin sister, I'm half scottish myself but I want the country to make a good account of themselves on the world stage.

{Ed001's Note - and we have players playing for other countries, so why give any more of a toss about England than them? You are clearly not from Liverpool so please do not tell me how to think, I will never give a rat's arse about England. I really do not care what Hendo prioritises, I only care about how he performs when he pulls on the Liverpool shirt. I am sure probably would prefer a World Cup because there is no chance of it ever happening, unlike trophies in a Liverpool shirt which are expected not a miracle.}

16.) 18 Jun 2018
18 Jun 2018 17:06:20
I'd say liverpool was one of the most celebrated cities in England these days. City of culture not so long ago, home of the fab 4. And the beatles

Thatcher never cared about working class people not just people from Liverpool.

{Ed001's Note - and your point is? The city of culture was nothing to do with England. It was a EU thing.}

17.) 18 Jun 2018
18 Jun 2018 17:21:52
Ed01=spot on as always
If they do well fine, if not so what Liverpool is my team, my Country is an embarrassment on so many political and moral levels so stuff ‘em. Harry Kane’s arrogance in the build up to this game is not befitting a national captain, he’s won nothing and Hendo should still be the captain as he has the maturity, only reason Southgate gave it to Kane is because in some games he’s going to play the Spurs liability and donkey that is Eric Dier, Dier by name and dire by nature.
Football, cricket, Rugby none of them are coming home until we display a little humility instead of the gutter press encouraging the English God given right to feel superior attitude to everything with absolutely zero justification other than the disgusting great British empire horrible southern based vitriol. I’m descended from celts who spent generations fighting the bloody English from London. I’ve more in common with Ireland, Scotland and the North East than the bloody St George’s Park lot. FA old boys club 🤢.

{Ed001's Note - exactly mate.}

18.) 18 Jun 2018
18 Jun 2018 17:46:11
Ed 001. I’m not from Liverpool so don’t really understand the history of the city as well as any local. I am somewhat fanatical about the history of LFC and so do have an affinity towards anything Scouse. You have explained the Thatcher years but that was 30 years ago. Not sure if any of the current England team were even born then.

Out of curiosity how do you feel Liverpool is treated these days and does it make you closer to being an Anglophile?

{Ed001's Note - I have found that foreigners have far more respect for Liverpool than the English. So no, I would say I am struggling to find any reason to care about England.

Patriotism is a false concept invented in medieval times by kings to get peasants to fight their wars.}

As a Scot now living in Canada I get caught on the fence watching England happy to see them win but equally happy to see them lose especially in humilating circumstances.
Why I support Liverpool quite simply King Kenny.
But the scottish connection goes all the way back to the first Liverpool team which was full of Scots and played in blue and white.
There where probably bagpipes playing Scotland the brave before kick off.

I live down South and can categorically assure you all that the general consensus about what the people of Liverpool are like, is disgusting. People who have never even been to Liverpool call me a bin dipper just for wearing the shirt in public. I've been told I support murderers. I've been asked if I have a job etc.

I do still consider myself English because I'm not from Liverpool. But I'd like to believe I'm an adopted Scouser because I'd rather see Liverpool win the Community Shield than see England win the World Cup 3 times in a row. Anything England do is a bonus and I don't blame anybody North of Birmingham for hating the South and having no patriotic feelings. I'm only 50 miles North of London and I still feel like they look down their noses at me.

You born and bred Northerners have right to hate our guts in my opinion. I'd like to think I'm one of the exceptions though 😂 We're not all stuck up supremacists!

Cheers Mo S
I’ve not got an Egypt shirt else I’d be wearing it as I drew your boys in the sweep 👍 instead I’m wearing my Javier Mascerano Argentina shirt that I bought to support him when he played for Liverpool.
The price of England shirts is a disgrace, just glad my son never asked for one. The furthest I’m prepared to go is to let him have a St George cross on his football boots by his name. Kids are still England fans as they don’t yet understand what a north south divided country we are.
As Ed01 says my son will soon be educated that he is scouse (well Merseyside as we are from wirral) and not English, the national anthem is only any use for that fantastic old Billy Connolly stand up sketch from way back.
I encourage all scousers to YouTube for it, classic. He also says in the same gig that the very desire to become a politician should automatically disqualify you from being allowed to become one 👍 top Scotsman, down with the English sassanacs 👊🏻.

look at the Irish lad just kicking over a hornets nest for the laugh. Apologies anyone who was irked. It was a tongue and cheek post. In fairness though, was an interesting read from the outside. Shocking mk, wear that jersey proudly mate. Pretty much agree with everything salah usually says. Koppite spot on. And ed1 as usual nails it.

Ed001 your words on Thatcher remind me of my Old man and my Uncle. they hate her and the way the Scouse population was treated by the Tory's.

Being an 80's baby, I have heard many stories and it seems they did not want the best for my generation either.

My Mama calls Teresa May Thatcher pt2.

{Ed001's Note - I would agree on that. My parents had to move down south for work during the Thatcher era, so I grew up being spat on, called a murderer and accused of every theft around just because I was from Liverpool. People think the jokes about hubcaps going missing are just harmless jokes, and in the main they are, but some people are stupid enough to actually believe them and sadly they can often be those in a position of power.}

18 Jun 2018 20:10:30
Oh my gosh Ed001! that's horrible but totally believable!

My Grandparents were immigrants to this country so they and my parents received similar treatment.

However, in my dads case he was very close with 3 gentlemen who took him in and tried to deflect trouble from him as he was very young and hardly knew any English having come from Ghana not many years before. Of these 3 kind men, 2 were Scouse one was Scottish.

They now identify as my Uncle Tony (literally as he married my Aunt), My Uncle Chris and My Uncle Charlie.

Theres so much more to Liverpool with my family than just LFC!

Ed001, my love and respect to you and your parents. you went through hell!

I'm sorry, I went off a bit too long there!

I love Scousers!

{Ed001's Note - my parents never really knew about it mate. As a kid I was too immature not to attach some blame to them for moving down south. They just had to suffer my moods as a kid, poor buggers, while never knowing the reason why.}

Koppite_68 What a atorming post!
I felt like you were about to start that much needed bloody revoloution!

Thats really sad for you and your parents Ed!

I know didn't exactly have a choice but good on you for riding through the storm! Particularly in a time period where even if you have spoken out, your words may have fallen on deaf ears!

{Ed001's Note - it's not so bad mate, it made me who I am after all. Though most people would probably say that is proof that it was bad!}

18 Jun 2018 20:34:09
LOL that did me laugh that last line ! Ed001 you're a star!

{Ed001's Note - aren't stars millions of years old??? I am not that old! Just look it now. Trust me nothing in life could ever have prepared me for the internet and what it is like!}

18 Jun 2018 21:16:11
Thanks Red Kurd but as my username suggests I’m 50 years old so not many would class me as “modern” 👴🏻 Especially those who witnessed me play on Sat, I’m like a cross between Alan Hansen, Glen Roeder and Franco Baresi but without the composure, skill or tackling skills of any of them 🤥, just ask Ken from Ireland 😛.
