As an extra note on Karius, it's worth mentioning that the most obvious symptoms of concussion when they present are identical to the symptoms of shock - nausea, dizziness, fatigue, erratic/ extreme behaviour. Anyone presenting those symptoms after the game Karius had would automatically be assumed as being in shock and it's only some time later, as the symptoms failed to go away at anything like an appropriate pace, that further investigations might begin to take place. Now clearly this is a medical team failing - if there is any reasonable chance of someone having a concussion, they should be checked for a concussion. But it also goes to highlight just how vital immediate checks are within a game rather than this 'wait and see if they 'look fine'' attitude currently adopted - because even if continuing in the game doesn't cause further harm to the player, the events of the game can lead medical professions down the entire wrong path during subsequent investigations and dramatically increase the wait for treatment.

I agree. More needs to be done in regards to head injuries not just by medical teams but referees too. Karius did complain to the ref that he was elbowed in the head so maybe in future referees become more insistent on play being stopped for some sort of medical check. These things could be very very serious karius got a lucky escape. With that being said I hope the lads career isn't affected by the injury. Any talk about replacements is a different conversation.

Spot on, Hijkle. As someone who has been watching the NFL for 15 years, you are dead on. Concussions are no joke and the symptoms linger for a which sometimes means that the player does not know he has one until he complains of headaches, dizziness and esp. migraines. The problem is that football is still WAY behind in terms of concussion protocols. All you have to do is watch the last WC final where Germany's Christophe Kramer was let back on the pitch after a head blow and he actually asked the ref "What is today's date". The ref stopped the game and got him off the pitch ASAP. FIFA and UEFA need to go learn how the NFL do it and incorporate that into football.

Just to clarify, Kramer had come on and after 14 mins, had asked the ref "Is this the final? " and then the ref took him off.
