What's the obsession with trophies?

I want to give a different perspective.

Ive been a Liverpool fan for 40 years and used to regularly stand on the Kop when standing was allowed. I used to watch some dross under souness and some better stuff under dalglish.

As a fan I want to win every game but that's unlikely. After an era of financial dominance from manu there has been others with Chelsea and now City.

I'd love to win every trophy (one would be nice) but I'd rather watch the brilliant football we are being treated to under Klopp even if that means we lost the next three finals.

The media often have this manager must win a trophy idea (I know klopp said he'd win us trophies by now and I'm sure he believed it however you have to have a ticket to win the lottery and three finals in three years isn't bad with the top level competition around these days from a lot more clubs) . They have been doing it all season with Poch but ask must spurs fans and they're loving the football they see and wouldn't swap him and rightly so.

On the flip side Wenger has won numerous fa cups in recent years but the fans weren't happy mostly as the football seemed to be going backwards.

Being part of a club and a community and a manager I respect is my #1 value. Trophies #2. And that will never change.

Does that make me a loser? I think it makes me and my fellow thinking fans winners.

We all want trophies - I grew up on them. But don't let that brain wash you in to not enjoying the thrill ride we are all currently on under the wonderful Klopp.

I for one am loving our football and if that means more 7-0s and the odd 0-0 that means financial powerhouses like city win everything in site then at least we are giving it a right good go.

I for one am looking forward to next seasons exciting chapter. COYR!

Easier to ask what’s the obsession with trophies when you admit you were brought up on them.
More difficult when you’ve never seen us win the league and you have to suffer other teams dominance.

Imagine if Shankly or Paisley had adopted that approach. Forget the trophies let’s just play all out attack.
We wouldn’t be the club we are now. We exist because of our glorious past and it’s the current teams job to live up to that expectation.

While one can't argue with your point, history, memories and people can be fickle sometimes. We all have a tendency to value most the things that have "best", "top", or "number one" attached to them. Just human nature. There was nothing spectacular about that team which played under Kenny Dalglish's second go at managing us. But I know, and I will always know, that we won a League Cup under him.

Our attacking style of football is a joy to watch and I value it. I will value some titles and trophies to go along with it, much higher! 😉.

A club is known for the trophies it win and not the amount of goals it scored. Our first and most important priority should always be trophies. So you are happy if we finish 10th and play good football?

I agree for the most part - exciting football and moving forward year on year is the most imortant thing, and we will win enough trophies in the end. Let’s also not forget where we’re coming from, which is consistently outside the top 4, and how much better this team is vs. almost any team in the last 10yrs apart from maybe 13/ 14.

There’s absolutely no reason to change course, focus on the football and the rest will follow.

You are remembered on trophies not finishing second, third or fourth or how many goals you have scored.

Most professional footballers never get near a major trophy and we moan about only 3 ucl finals in 13 years.

Winning and trophies are great, but what makes separate than all the other clubs in England even Europe is our culture as fans. If a genie popped up right now and said you could 7 trophies over the next 10 years, but it will be because of some billionaire who came in a bought you all the trophies. You could win 2 trophies in 10 years based on building a team, I would prefer the latter. Our culture is what defines us and separates us from the others.

We have a song that teaches is to standby our players and club no matter what. Would any of you trade Istanbul for another title.

Surely this is some sort of wind up. What’s the obsession with trophies? Have fans expectations of Liverpool dropped that far that ‘good football’ is good enough now. No that’s ridiculous, the amount being spent and the time being afforded to Klopp means we are after achieving the biggest honours in football and we’ve been to 3 finals and lost all 3. It’s about time we be a bit more cut throat and address the weaknesses because I’m sure Klopp and many within the club are tired of losing now. Some of the weaknesses have been so obvious since even before Klopp and Rogers yet still haven’t been addressed. Liverpool made its name on winning and that’s what we need to do again at all costs. This is the modern game now, get used to it.

I agree with the most part, OP. The "must win a trophy" talking point is just lazy nonsense used by the media to attack managers they have issues with. Example. You always hear that nonsensical talking point ONLY when talking about Klopp. You NEVER here that when Poch is concerned. Poch is a manager who has won NOTHING in his whole career. He has won NOTHING since he's come to Spurs for 4 years now in England, longer than Klopp. Yet whenever Poch bottles a semi final or final or KO round in the PL, you don't hear a thing about it. Why? Cos some members of the media don't wanna apply that "rule" to everyone cos if they did, some managers for who they carry their water, would get swept up into it.

For me, Klopp is a winner (his record in Germany proves that), end of story. His finals record are irrelevant to me cos only those who play a final get to win or lose it. You don't get a chance at winning a final if you got dumped out by Sevilla or bottled it vs Juventus in the KO stages, Fact. Only those who actually play in
a final get to do that. And for those whining and obsessing that we haven't won the PL in 3 decades. News Flash: That is past tense and has NOTHING to do with Klopp so you need to take up your issue with those who came before him and those who bottled it when that opportunity came and we know who those people are. Klopp is our best chance to win the PL or the CL (yeah, that's right) and we will do this his way and win trophies or we will fail while trying our VERY best to do it his way. YNWA!

I agree with kman. We ARE liverpool. It is ALL about winning trophies. Seeing our team play brilliant football is great and exciting as it looks more and more likely that we will win something soon.

No offence to klopp or the boys but gimme rafa, 1 0 and a European Cup over klopp 7 0 and nowt. I think we will win the league soon. Next year or the one after, then we will be back to take our 6th European Cup. As champions of England.

Sorry guys but this is nonsense, the whole point of football is to win trophies. Every team in the world exists to win them.
