To quote ed2, "ignore costs, they are irrelevant".

And if you did want to play football manager then you could argue the cost of butland will be largely offset against the sales or migs and Ward.

Butland will come in as competition for karius, not to replace him. But he will be confident he can do so.

I have long felt karius has done enough in the second half of this season to keep the jersey next year and I believe this (potential) signing shows klopp feels the same.
If we signed Allison etc then it would be to replace karius, if it was navas or Reina then there would be a lack of competition.
I think this will turn out to be a shrewd move by klopp with two keepers of a similar level battling and hopefully getting the best out of each other.

{Ed025's Note - i agree carra..

Ultimately we need to trust Klopp and the recruitment team they have proved more shrewd than many a previous season!

If we sign Butland I will give him the utmost support so long as he works hard for the badge!

Unless we go back to keeper rotation, which will undo all the defensive improvement. In my opinion Butland will be Number 1 and Karius will have to wait and hope he cocks up.

Redmersey, Butland has not shown that he is better than Karius at any point this season esp. since Karius took the job full time, IMO and in fact, Karius has beaten out Allisson as no. 1 cos Klopp ain't signing him anymore and Butland is not fit to shine his boots. Personally, I am not for this move cos my reasons go beyond the football pitch and I have stated them in other threads. If Klopp wants him then, I hope he knows what he is doing here.

Take your Karius blinkers off BRover. I don’t want to list the Karius errors ir the ones he has made where he got lucky but you have obviously deleted them from your memory.

He hasn’t had a great deal to in most games and, apart from 2 good saves any others he has made are ones that you would expect him to save.

Butland will be behind a defence where he won’t be overworked but will make a difference on the occasions he is called upon.

The bottom line is that Butland has not signed yet but if he does I will trust that Klopp knows better than all of us in here. If we don’t sign a keeper I trust Karius more than I did in the past but, in my opinion, he is an accident waiting to happen. I hope it’s not on 26th May.

Keeper rotation is not the way forward imo.

I'd rather rotation than just being like, you will dropped of you make a mistake. Mignolet got years, I hope Karius goes a fair chance.

To me Klopp is not going to be rushing AGAIN in placing a new player as keeper.
Karius will start next season if he's fit, the rest of keepers available then will have to wait for their chance.

Karius needs time. He was taken to Citeh's youth team because he has the potential. He needs to be trusted to develop. The 26th will say a lot, I'm sure.
