Ed001, with macca saying we are close to signing Butland what is your opinion of him as a player and do you think he will be first choice or back up against Karius? Have to admit I wasn't impressed with him this season for stoke but I wasn't happy with Robertson either after his season at Hull and he turned out great so I will be patient and give the lad chance. Cheers as always.

{Ed001's Note - back up, he is home grown which is a plus, leaves a space in the squad for a quality player, other than that, he is just an injury prone average keeper. Nothing outstanding, mainly because of injuries though, before those he had a lot of potential, they seem to have badly hit his confidence.}

Ed, do you think Lambert's comments were just lip service then? He laughed off the suggestion of £30m as if that was an outrageously low figure.

If we had to pay more than £30m for a keeper to sit on the bench, I'd be more than a little alarmed!

{Ed001's Note - Lambert is not involved in player sales or buys there. He was just trying to boost the confidence of a player lacking it.}

Thank God for that Ed. I don't mind Butland as a back up keeper.

Does make me wonder about Ward, then, Ed001.

His aptitude/ attitude must be an issue as he would also be homegrown for bench duties.

A shame as he seemed to have potential.

Am I right in thinking that if you have spent a certain amount of your youth career here then you also qualify as homegrown? Thinking of Grabara being recruited at 17 and whether he would therefore qualify in years to come should he stay?

{Ed001's Note - Ward should have had this season on loan, he won't waste another in his career.

Yes, you have to have a certain number of years prior to a certain age, not sure what it is now off the top of my head, they change the requirements so I would need to check what they will be for next season.}

Perhaps a big money move to a champions league club will be enough to boost his confidence?

Cheers Ed001, I agree his injuries have stalled his development. Not a bad back up keeper though and he will definitely keep Karius on his toes. Hopefully he’s is one of many signings this summer.

So you are happy enough for Lfc to pay £30 million for a keeper to sit on the bench MK. I have to say i would be completley stunned if we paid anywhere near that much when our first keeper isn't anywhere near top notch. I would maintain Butland, if purchased would be for the first 11. We shall see.

I doubt he would he cost anywhere near 30 million rover as he should have a relegation clause in his contract which means he can leave for lower fee. And He’s a big earner at stoke, I think they’ll be keen to get him off the wage bill.

Do you think it will be made aware to him that he is coming in as back up? Or do you think he will be signed thinkin for he can take over as no1? Cheers.

No Rover, I didn't say that at all. You've misinterpreted. The reason I asked the question is because I was concerned Liverpool were doing that. With Lambert saying Butland was worth more than £30m, and Ed001 saying he'd be back up, I was worried we would spend over £30m on a substitute.

Ed001 then explained that Lambert didn't set the prices, and that he made up an inflated value just to give Butland a confidence boost. So knowing that he would in fact be cheaper, I'm okay with him being a back up.

I'm not sure I've explained that well, but long story short is I don't want Butland as first choice, or if he will cost anything over £15m, absolute maximum.

Sly have said butland made the most saves of any keeper in the Premiership this season. Obviously only one stat but thought I'd share. For me he is 4th or 5th best keeper in the league.

Not my first choice, but infinitely better than Navas who we also looked at. Klopp worked wonders with Oxlade, maybe having a manager who believes in him can help him achieve the potential that he showed a couple of seasons ago before his injuries.

Negative finally says something positive, but it is about a player that isn’t LFCs, so close!

His confidence is low at the moment, he’s looked very shakey on crosses recently and positioning has been questioned.

I am trying tia19 but it's not my thing. To be fair I've been very positive about mo and ox when they signed when other posters were how can I say, not keen.

Ed01, can you please, help me? Are we sure we want Butland anywhere near here? Really? I mean, why sign a young, English GK as no. 2 who may prolly think he should be no. one where as we could get another GK, a bit older who can mentor Karius and improve him while he himself gets some games in the Cups to keep him sharp? I mean, imagine the media campaign that would occur should Karius have a bad game or two where the media would kick up a HUGE stink about how Butland should be given his chance and all that stuff? Is that what we really want? I don't think so, man. IMO, Butland is not a patch on Karius and tho Karius is a very competent GK (your words exactly), he needs to do more and I'm sure he knows that. Do you not think it is a bad idea to bring in Butland with all the circus that would cause should the scenario I mentioned above happen? Cheers, man!

{Ed001's Note - when you are a club the size of Liverpool, it is always a media circus no matter what. When Mignolet was the option we still used to hear about how Karius should be dropped for him and we all know he is useless.}

Butland’s had a season behind a dross defence and played in a really poor side, it knocks confidence just as the flip side is players growing (i. e. TAA) and blossoming in a side playing well.
I don’t personally think Butland is world class nor great with the ball at his feet but everyone said Pickford was brilliant yet behind an average defence and negative manager with the pressure of the crowd on the back of the manager he has made some glaring errors this season.
I’d be happy to give him a go given how well Ox, Milner, Robertson and Gini have done despite their initial detractors about money spent, quality, prospect of improving blah, blah, blah, let’s face it not one of us could claim we thought all those would have a good season, Karius would grow in confidence and Mo Salah would be such an amazing find.
Thus whoever we sign give them support and a chance, it’s amazing how good players can be with our backing. On that note I was disappointed on two counts yesterday, Henderson didn’t get a song of support sung in his name during the game when others did and my rendition of “sh1t on the Seagulls, sh1t on the Seagulls tonight, na, na, na” was me all on my own in the Kop with people looking at me like I had a whellie on my head 😊, most upsetting that no one got the banter of it usually being the other way around 😜 I hate Seagulls, pesky critters that pinch your chips.

Thanks for the response, Ed. Koppite_68, I agree with your post completely. I always have confidence in the players we have till they prove me wrong and I am a very patient man. It took 2/ 3 years for me to give up on Migs while to me, Matip is not good enough either. I was not for Ox BUT he got my support cos he is an LFC player and he proved me wrong. Up Da Pool and let's go #TakeThe6th!
