Cheers ed- love the updates, interesting about the Caniggia claim. He’s right in one way, that with him out of the match there was early only one good player in the team but as a kid watching that amazing tournament, from day one Germany looked the best team by a mile. I also might add that the Irish team could have gotten further with a better manager- that team had so many brilliant players (many of which were Liverpool and predominantly the reason I support Liverpool) but all we were told to do was lump the ball forward and keep running at them.

Germany were the best team in that tournament right from the off. I however, did not like the way they were diving all over the pitch esp. Klinsmann (who I adored and still do) who kept diving in that final to get the Argies sent off which eventually happened. They would have won anyway BUT the pen. converted by Bremhe was NEVER a penalty.

All in all, great tournament and a lot of upsets of which the Cameroon v Argentina opening game was regarded as the biggest upset in WC history. Until Senegal beat France in the opening game of the 2002 edition which at the time, was no surprise to me cos (living in France at the time) the French were so full of themselves and thought they would walk that competition. They got the humiliation they deserved, eliminated without scoring a goal.

argentina were improving every game, i think they had a real chance with Cannigia as he caused teams problems every game he played in that tournament. That first game also saw him glide past 2 challenges only for him to be taken out so hard that the defenders boot flew off. shocking challenge.
