Hi Eds,
Been following the page for a while but this is my first post. I remember a while back when our defence was all over the place and we heard JK saying that the defence was fine and we didn't need to bring anyone in then all of a sudden we went out and signed van dijk. Do you think he was saying that to keep the pressure of an already vulnerable defence and do you think this could be what's playing out with the goalkeeper I see that he's been playing much better recently but I still don't trust the lad and to be honest he's not had a great deal to do but still looks as if he's got a mistake in him. I think I could name at least 8 better keepers in the league at the moment surely that's an area he would want to improve on isn't it? I know you've done the goaly thing to death on here, but can't help think they might be keeping there cards close to their chest on this one, so as to keep pressure of karius. Great page by the way keep up the good work.

{Ed001's Note - the keeper that was behind the vulnerable defence was Mignolet, the change to Karius has been part of the reason things have improved.}

What did you expect Klopp to say at the time? ‘These defenders are all rubbish and I can’t wait to buy some new one’s’?
I’d love to know who the 8 better keepers in the league are than Karius? Maybe the world class saves against Newcastle, Everton and West Ham weren’t enough to convince you. Right now I’d take de Gea over Karius and that’s about it.

What a post, Karius is excellent and there are currently NOT 8 GK in the league better than him. Please do name them so i can have a laugh, am travelling all day today and need that!

Not that this means anything but a stats site that ranks players makes Karius the fourth best keeper this season behind Ederson, Lloris and Pope. DDG and Courtois make up a top six that are way ahead of the rest.

Not just that but he's beginning to create a solid understanding with the defence, we're becoming a strong unit, a slightly better keeper may lose that understanding and that part of the pitch becomes a transition once again, he deserves his place, he should keep it next season.

I would like to see the Op attempt to list 8 Gks in the BPL better than Karius. DDG aside, I would not trade Karius at the minute for anyone.
Chelsea fans are fed up with Courtois being so error prone and his kicking is shocking. Karius has been better since being crowned our No.1.
Hugo LLoris has made quite a few howlers this season as well. Spurs' fans are questioning whether he is past his best.
Ederson is more a midfielder than a GK. Our LFC and even Utd showed he cannot handle pressure very well and his shot stopping is over rated.
Cech is finished and Pickford is Mignolet 2.0
So please tell me which GKs is it you are talking about.

Was about to say that the only 2 goalkeepers who have done consistently better this season are Nick Pope and David de Gea.

Lloris is probably the world's most overrated Goalkeeper in my opinion, Ederson has made a ton of mistakes once the city defense has been put under any sort of pressure which has been very little because of the pathetic way teams set up to play them, there is a reason even Nike can't make Brazil play him ahead of Alisson when they pick most of the team, he (Alisson) is that much better as a Goalkeeper.

Courtois has been nothing short of shocking this season. Pickford is the English Mignolet, give it 2 seasons and Everton will be looking to replace him maybe even before. I have always thought there is a very good GK in Karius, the problem was him getting his chance straight after coming back from a broken hand, and fans who don't understand the meaning of the word patience.

Welcome to the page mate, in fairness, if you are talking about early Karius then the post might hold a little more water as he didn’t help himself with a few dodgy moments and quite a few pundits have still not been able to let the Karius criticism go but he really has helped improve our defense. I might suggest you read back a few match reviews by ed1 and see how much he’s come on. Personally, unless we go for ter stegan or Alisson, I think he is well up to the job. He’s young and he’s German. Two fantastic attributes for any keeper imo. If I’m wrong, someone might correct me, but I think that achterberg is improving as a goalkeeping coach so hopefully that helps Karius even more going forward.

I’d be interested to hear who these 8 better keepers are. De Gea, yes. Courtois, possibly. But other than that I’m struggling.

Karius is agile, brave, quick, alert and is gaining confidence.

To come to the OP's defence I think there are definitely three keepers that the neutral would put above Karius and probably 5, 8 may be stretching it though.

I think we'd all agree that DDG is above him whilst Pope had had a bigger impact than him in the battle of the rookies. The third would be Ederson who had played a key role in turning City into title winners.

The other two are Courtois and Lloris, I haven't watched either of them closely this season but in previous seasons they've been performing at a level Karius hasn't reached yet.

I've been pleasantly surprised by how solid Karius has been but, as I've said a lot recently, his form had bought him more time to prove himself, rather than he's cemented his position as our goalkeeper.

The biggest improvement is VVD. We don't look vulnerable on set pieces anymore.

Lloris has mto be the most overrated gk in the premiership. I just don't get why likes of Karius last season made a few mistakes and was absolutely blasted from pundits and media. Yet Lloris makes far worse ones a few weeks later and after a brief mention its forgotten about! They still bring up karius mistake from the start of last season! Yet barely a mention of Lloris weak save to allow Sterling a 3 yard tap in! Or rushing out and bringing sterling down for penalty a few days ago! Baffles me.

8 keepers 😂 come on! You must have included Hart, Butland and the rest of the over rated keepers in that then. Credit where it’s due, Karius has looked a lot more confident lately and made some brilliant saves. You need to forget his shakey start and judge him on how he’s been since being reintegrated into the team. He deserves to be no. 1 for us next season, why spend 50 million on another keeper when our current one is doing just fine.

With Mignolet and Bravo gone, I now think the 7 best keepers play for the 7 best teams in the league (Ederson, De Gea, Karius, Lloris, Courtois, Cech and Pope) . De Gea is the best by far in England, but the order of the other 6 will vary from person to person as they are all so close to one another and it really depends on what you like from a keeper.

We can all see Karius' improvement because we watch him every week, but the neutral will still remember the 'dodgy old Karius' from when everybody was criticising our defence. I agree with the OP in that the MOTD neutral will probably rate him that lowly because they will have seen the same quality of saves from nearly all the keepers in the league as Karius' recent ones and therefore will just attribute our upturn to Van Dijk's arrival.

We know how much he's improved and improved us, average joe highlight man won't. Also, I'm still not 100% convinced if this is good temporary form or permanent class but hope he gets at least next season to justify himself. He's not Mignolet and that can skew our view. Anybody would make us look better than he did.

are we sure the original poster isn't referring to mignolet and not karius! maybe he meant to write there are at least 18 better keepers than him in the league. :)

{Ed001's Note - well that would make sense, Mignolet has been playing a lot better recently. He always seems to have a much better game when he is sat on the bench than he ever did between the sticks.}

Cech and Lloris have struggled this season.
Pope is only in his first season so time will tell.

I know this is unpopular but I think Pickford has done well for Everton.

IB, I was going to ask the OP to name these 8 GK's that ere better than Karius currently as well. For this season IMO, the only two GK's I would take over Loris are DDG and and jut maybe Pope (only cos he plays in a very defensive system at Burnley) . As for Lloris, he has had a poor season with more and worse errors than Karius made through out his LFC career till date. Same with Courtois and Ederson is very good BUT when exposed, he has been found wanting (ironically the team he made the most mistakes against was LFC so go figure) . Karius will be no. 1 next season provided he is in form and keeps improving. As for Ed's assessment of how good Migs is when starting games from the bench? PRICELESS!
