My dad's favourite player along with Kenny and Eusebio. Wish I could watch the old greats in action!

Why did he play in America for so long? Surely the sport was tiny in America in those days.

That is a ridiculous amount of trophies, how did Holland never win the world cup?

{Ed001's Note - he only spent 2 and a bit seasons there. There is a bit of dispute over his motives, it was partially money-motivated, thought he could have earnt much more returning to Barca. He says he chose it to build football as a sport there and his actions while there do suggest that is closer to the truth. I will do the article on his life next so go into more detail on his time there.}

Lovely piece ed on a true giant of the game. The quote you included said everything you could say about the great man. The game truly lost someone exceptional when he passed. Cheers for the time effort put on on this article.

{Ed001's Note - cheers mate. I did think that quote summed him up brilliantly.}

Yeah it works fine now. What a player, what a man an absolute legend! He was in my opinion by far the most interesting man in football. Thanks for the player profile on him Ed.

{Ed001's Note - certainly the most important and influential man the game has ever seen.}

Very true mate I really look forward to the one of his life, I mean there's so much to his life so I'd imagine that might take some time lol.

{Ed001's Note - it is going to take ages. That is why I didn' t hold back the profile to put up at the same time.}

When reading that article I was thinking it sounds a bit like Firmino ed is talking about here.
Glad your writing a second article about him ed, Cruyff is a legend twice over afterall.

{Ed001's Note - I usually do a player profile alongside the Legends article and post them together but there is too much to do on Cruyff to hold back the playing profile.}

Thank you Ed, I played 15 years in Sunday football wearing the number 14 shirt after watching the great man in the 1974 World Cup. Absolute legend and football visionary. I know it’s sad but I still buy his trainers and clothing range, quality stuff like the football he served up.
Really enjoyed the article, the opening goal in the 1974 World Cup final was unreal (still lost a bet with my dad, who somehow knew the German machine would prevail over the Dutch flair) . My first football lesson from dad who himself was a real student of our great game, god rest him.
Cheers Ed top drawer that ⚽️.

{Ed001's Note - welcome mate, though I am not sure if it was much of a tribute having a Sunday league player wearing his number though!}

Great article, Ed001. If there was a vote for "the most influential man in football ever (throughout a lifetime) ", this man would get my vote. To my knowledge there is no other man who has influenced both during and post the onfield football career, more than Cruyff. Pele and Maradona were better players, but post the football career both have quietly moved into marketing gimmicks and mostly senseless predictions. But you're right about the arrogance. I remember the World Cup he sat out despite the team needing him. And he was regularly on the warpath with top brass at both Ajax and Barcelona. I guess genius has its quirks. Looking forwward to the second article.

{Ed001's Note - there is more to him missing the 78 World Cup. I will explain in full in the Legends of the Game article on him, but he did not just sit out despite the rumours at the time and the story put out that he was boycotting because of the Peron dictatorship.}

You can still find flair in the Sunday leagues Ed, however you are correct, not by watching me. No wonder I packed in to take up the whistle 🤣
Just made me realise though I’ve made a school boy error and requested the No 2 shirt in the charity game, got to try and swap that for the 14 now, what was I thinking? 😱.

{Ed001's Note - old age that is mate! There are only 2 numbers worth having if you are a team player in any sport - 14 or 23. 7 and 9 are for the gloryhounds not better players. ;-)

You called that right buddy, got a hunch I could well be the eldest in the game 👴🏻.

Jimmy Hill was pretty influential.

Cruyff was a marvellous player but boy did he know it and made sure everyone else knew it.
