I have to say Son is one of the best players in the league. And if we were to ever lose Salah or Mane I Would love to get him. Top class player Imo.

He played well last night but Sane is a level above. If Mane gets back to last seasons form he will be even a level about Sane.

Son would thrive in our system.

Very good player. I think it would be impossible for us to buy players from Tottenham. First we are 2 similar sides, players leaving there will have the same problems with Liverpool that made them leave Spurs in the first place, mainly wages and trophies.

Son is a fantastic player, but he's not at Mane, Firmino or Salah's level for me. Like Wijnaldum, Son is absolutely useless away from home. That alone is enough for him to not be one of the best players in the League. He wouldn't get in Liverpool or Man City's best XI. Mane, Firmino, Salah, Sterling, Sane and Shirt I are all better players.

I would take him for competition though. He is definitely better than Ings, Solanke, Origi, Kent, Ojo or Sturridge. After all, it is a squad game nowadays and over a 60 game season he'd get plenty of game time.

New phone auto corrected Aguero to shirt 😂.

Have to disagree mk. Son is a fantastic player. He will probably be 1 of the 6 shortlisted for player of the year.

Son has 2 goals in 19 away games. Yet at Wembley, he has 14 goals in 23 games. (Though it's less relevant, he also has 1 assist away, and 8 at home; assists are not always conclusive, but in this case they also back up his fragility on the road) .

He has 1 goal against Liverpool at Wembley, 1 last night against Juventus at Wembley, and 1 in each group game against Dortmund.

Aside from that though his goals have come against West Ham, Huddersfield (×2), Southampton, Brighton, Watford, Rochdale (×2), Apoel Nicosia, Crystal Palace, Stoke and Everton. All of these goals were scored at home apart from the 1 against Watford.

I'll let you draw your own conclusions. It all points towards him only being a consistent goal threat at home against weak defences.

That's a brilliant point MK. I too think Son is a beautiful footballer but if he can't do it away from home then that's a problem. It must be pretty daunting playing in front of a load of skin heads and lager louts ingerland fans (ye who throws the white plastic chair while getting sprayed by a hose) you know what I mean? The majority of the fans are honest, hard working family men/ women but there are some nasty fans at certain clubs. I think he'll get over that, he is young. The hand shake thing is cringe worthy, makes me think he lives in a fantasy world, a fantasy that is broken when reality kicks in, away on a Friday night at Burnley. ;)

{Ed001's Note - is that what it is or do Spurs as a team create less opportunities away from home because their form has been poor on the road in comparison to their form at Wembley?}

Mane has 7 goals in 14 away appearances (and 5 assists), and 7 goals in 17 home appearances (and 2 assists) . So he is only 2 goals behind Son in 11 less appearances, but also consider that Mane had an appearance clocked for about 30 seconds against Chelsea, and 3 of Son's goals came against Apoel Nicosia and Rochdale. In contrast, Mane missed both games against Maribor, and Liverpool didn't draw Newport and Rochdale in the cups, otherwise Mane would probably be ahead of him on that front too.

Mane has scored against Sevilla, Porto (×3), Arsenal, Man City and Burnley. 7 goals against 5 different decent teams. His other 7 goals did come against poor opposition though in Spartak (×2), Watford, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Stoke and Newcastle. It is pretty clear to see Mane is a consistent goal threat irrespective of the opposition quality or what stadium he is playing in. Exactly half of his goals were against good opposition, and exactly half were at home.

I respect your opinion mad max, but I think Son is hugely over rated. 16 goals in 42 appearances, pales in comparison to Mane's 14 goals in 31 appearances, even before you look into the context of those goals. Once you delve deeper into their goalscoring records, actual minutes played, injury records, who they scored against, where they scored etc it only goes more in Mane's favour. Son's clearly a very good player, but one of the best 6 players in the league? I'm not sure about that. He's probably only the 5th best left forward after Mane, Sane, Sanchez and Hazard!

Kane has scored 20 of his 35 goals this season away from home though Ed001. So is it Spurs creating less? Or is it just that Kane is the only player in their squad with the bottle and composure to score away from home or against top quality defenders/ keepers?

It kind of makes a mockery of Son that his only goal against a team in the Premier League top 6 was not only at Wembley as Liverpool capitulated, but he was being marked by Matip and the goalkeeper was Mignolet.

I think Spurs are a team of bottlers, spearheaded by Kane who is world class luckily for them. Son is a part of the problem, and not just a victim of it in my opinion.

Son is a very good player and a two footed one! He is in no way similar to Mane or Salah. Son is more technical than speed! He is not a winger after all! He would thrive under Klopp. c'mon people drop him and have a look at Bailey at Leverkusen. What a player!

It wasn't my original opinion P1, but I certainly agreed with the almost universally accepted prediction they would struggle there. I'm pretty sure most people thought that though based on their embarrassing showing in last season's European games.

Do you have anything valuable to add to this debate or are you here to troll me because I agreed with somebody else on a totally unrelated subject 8 months ago?

Good points by both ed01 and mks, it's probably a bit of both. In fact it almost certainly is. I think spurs are having a purple patch but I don't think it will last. They desperately want to finish top four and are fighting Chelsea for that spot. And us I guess, even utd and possibly even arsenal, though probably not. We will see if they have the bottle, it would be crazy if roman abramovic's billions didn't qualify for European Cup. That would be 1 qualification in 3 years. Wow.

17.) 08 Mar 2018
08 Mar 2018 20:02:59
Do you not also think it's the way spurs are set up to play it's all about Kane, where as at Liverpool mane and salah benefit from the space which firminho creates. Put Kane in the Liverpool team and no doubt salah won't get half the chances he's getting now as the space won't be there. Put son in the Liverpool team and he might also benefit from firminho. Just look at the ox he's not to far off his goals and assist total he got at arsenal already in his first season.

No doubt He's a good player Brover. I Don't think he takes us to another level though. He'd be on our bench if everyone was fit. He needs to get over his issues away from home first and foremost or he'll always just be the forward equivalent of Wijnaldum.

{Ed025's Note - he would come in for mane at the moment MK for me..

Acered - but you couldn't put him Salah's class.
