interested in what people think about the away goals rule? is there a better alternative?

for me it seems crazy that a 0-0 and 1-1 score over two legs gives the advantage to the team who scored the away goal. seemed pretty fair over the 2 games right?

but, are there other viable options out there to separate teams rather than just go into extra-time?

I think the away goal should stop when extra time kicks in.

Extra time means more injuries for teams at the money end of the season. Football is about scoring goals, I think the away goals rule is cool. It's interesting. Also, what viable options are there? Golden goals also seems a little harsh.

Nothing amatter with the away goal rule you have 180 minutes of football to play and to win the game out right. It's also the same for every team and knowing to everybody, like a say teams have 180 minutes of football to win the game if they don't like the away goal rule but personally a don't think many people will or would complain about the away goal rule.

Is it not to encourage teams to play away from home, rather than just park the bus and win at home?

Not a fan of away goal rule at all. Can understand the logic, to try get teams to push for a goal. Rather than sit in play Jose the bus driver away from home. But never sits right with me a team going out having not lost either game over the two legs.

really just trying to drum up ideas. I do see the value in the away goals rule. again just pointing out that it doesn't necessarily mean that the best team over two legs goes through. does scoring an away goal demonstrably declare one team as better than the other? or is it just the best option for a tie breaker we have? I don't know what the answer is tbh!

I do like the drama, but like coco pointed out, on the rare occasions it happens it does seem a bit unfair that the away goals can seperate two teams when both games are a draw! is that justifiable means to change the system? probably not!

Rock, paper, scissors - no better decider than that.

All sides are aware of the rule so I see no issue with it - I think it makes it more exciting and dramatic as one away goal can really flip a tie on its head, I think that adds to the theatre and spectacle. Removing it would take away some of that and certainly play into the hands of the more negatively inclined managers - as a previous poster said they should not be counted in extra time but that's it.
