We didn't test him too much but was very impresesed with their CB Felipe! How would he fare as a partner for Dijk?

He's certainly better then Matip that's for sure. I've not seen enough of him to say he could partner VVD but from what I have seen, yeah he's decent.

Matip can be lazy and therefore finds himself caught out by clever strikers but at actual tackling and aerial presence he ain't half bad. I don't think I've seen him be beaten by a forward running with the ball. Another clean sheet. We have conceded 1 goal in 5 games. The defence don't need slagging they deserve praise. What more do you want than a clean sheet?

I fell asleep before the second half (5am in my part of the world) but Matip was woeful in the first half. He played their players onside multiple times, lost the man he was marking a couple of times and gave Karius a dodgy back pass. I understand what you say Supersalah that the defence is doing well but it is/ has been doing well in spite of Matip not because of him - it's lucky Porto were nothing special because a better team would've punished us with Matip at the back - I think the whole defence looks way more vulnerable and nervous when he plays and that is a huge concern, I'd avoid playing him unless absolutely forced to.

I was working Seano and missed the game. He was fine against West ham. I prefer lovren, don't get me wrong. I think I prefer Klavan too. Shame he is left footed coz that is Vvd position. Klavan was coming good too, really good actually.

Matip is the poorest CB we have at the club, IMO.

I am coming around to that conclusion as well BRover, i was willing to give him time to come good after an okay season last season but this season he has gone backwards massively in my opinion. I know Klavan would probably be the first of the CB to be sold but i'd rather keep him than Matip who makes the same mistakes all the time, yesterday he could've easily cost us 2 goals if Vincent Abu Bakkar was more fresh and fit! In a perfect world we would sign 1 top class CB to partner van Dijk (Lovren is very good when he is good but we all know his consistency is crap) and let Klavan and Matip go.

New CB - van Dijk
Gomez - Lovren.

I'd give Lovren a little more time Nostradmus - he has looked much more settled and competent (and consistent) with Karius behind him and VVD next to him. I'm not saying he is the best CB in the world but I certainly think he can be (if he was willing) a useful member of the squad. Long term we probably will look for another CB (or Gomez will make the position his own) but, until then, I'd keep Lovren. I thought Klavan was starting to look settled to but hard to see a future for the lad anymore. Completely agree with selling Matip - he is an accident waiting to happen and has shown nothing but regression.

I put him on a list of "hidden gems" or players that don't regularly get attention but I believe are talented players a few months back. Been watching this guy for a while - very very composed.

I like lovren a lot. He is a bit of a liverpool cult hero. Winning player of the month after a really poor month was a great show of support. I don't think lovren or matip could organise. I think Klavan probably could as he seems quite smart but maybe the language barrier and the fact he was a new player held him back. So my point Is we had some really good cbs before Vvd came but none could really take charge. With Vvd playing and organising they look like different players.

I actually think it's Casillas that we should be offering a contract to. Keeping Karius as No1 - he'd be a great mentor and would do a good job if he ever had to step in because of injury or loss of form. I've not rated him so much in the past, but he looked very steady in that game.

{Ed001's Note - please god no, not Casillas, one of the most overrated players in history and not the best attitude behind the scenes either.}
