Strange how we seem to have this week defence and yet we have only lost 3 league games all season, less than any other team other than city! Are we really that bad?

Goals conceded is a better measure. Here’s the top 6:

City 18
ManU 18
Chelsea 19
Spuds 22
Liverpool 29
Arsenal 34.

Dale the problem is when we concede it’s usual 2 or 3 mate.

In 36 games this season we’ve conceded 2 or more 11 times almost a third of ours games not great .

Thumbs down.

Where would we be if that was 15/ 18 instead of 29.

Goals conceded at home:
Man U - 5
Liverpool - 7
Man City - 9

Yes, we have conceded 22 goals away from home. However we have the second best away record in the league with 24 points from 13 games. Only City with 31 points can better that.

Our problem has been drawing games at home. Despite having the 2nd best defensive record at home, we have just 26 home points due to 5 draws. Spurs and Arsenal have 28, Man U have 31, and Man City have 37.

So it is our home form that is holding us back and yet we've only conceded 7 there. It actually points towards a lack of goals scored at Anfield strangely enough. We're top scorers away from home with 32, but we have just 25 goals at Anfield. Teams like Burnley, Man U and Everton are still turning up and sitting deep to knock draws. We need to find an answer for that. You can blame the defence for conceding in those 1-1 draws to be fair, but for me Klopp needs to be playing 2 strikers at home against these defensive sides. Put Ings or Solanke up top WITH Firmino. You don't need 3 of Can, Henderson, Gini and Milner in those kind of games.

Just my opinion though lads. Too easy to blame the defence alone. There are XI players on the pitch.

It’s the number of draws that make the difference rather than losses. We’d be second if we turned the draws into wins.

Agree entirely with above post from MK. When we know teams are going to sit deep we should put another striker on, get wide and get those crosses in. We’re in the best position we have been for a while though so we shouldn’t complain to much, but it’s always about finding the next level of improvement, not standing still, otherwise we’ll just stagnate and fall away again like we have done several times over the last 25 years.

Whatever the impact on results, goals conceded is the most accurate reflection of a team’s defence.
Out of the top 6, ours is currently rated 5th.

Some of that is down to having one of the poorest goalkeepers and part of it is down fo the midfield and fullbacks leaving our defence exposed too much.

Wouldn’t swap our football for Man U though.

the only thing which should make a difference is point collected and the position in the table.

We conceded half of those goals in 4 games.

You can prove anything with stats - for me it's more the confidence thing. When I was a kid back in the 70's and then through the 80's if we ever went 2 or 3 goals up it was 'Thanks for coming and see you next time'. This past couple of years it is a case of 2 or 3 up . let's hope they don't score one or we are in trouble.
