Hi Eds,

Trivial question, but something I'm sure you are able to explain. Whilst all public conversations talk about how much players earn per week, do footballers generally get paid per week? or is it per month like many other occupations today? or something differently entirely?

Thanks.

{Ed002's Note - Actually a good question. At one time players were only paid during the season and not in the summer, and for some smaller clubs that is still true. For most, but not all, sides the wages are now paid monthly over the year but you don’t need to go too far back to find weekly wages being paid.}

Insightful as ever Ed002,
gracias.

{Ed002's Note - Think back also to when football players had summer jobs - playing county cricket, bus conductor etc.}

On that point; do they pay tax like a paye employee or do they have their own international companies who get the cash and help minimise tax?

{Ed002's Note - After “expenses” they pay tax. Remind me in a day or two about some of the approaches taken in the past, and I will tell (nearly) all.}

I always wondered if players got as excited as us normal folk when the open up their payslips each week/ month.
“Ooooh! They paid me for 10 goals instead of the 9 I actually scored! Ssssh. ”.

Really good question. I'm sure its been monthly for at least 10 years if not more? I remember when Riise's payslip was photographed and published a few years back, showing a monthly net amount. Even then was pretty decent, albeit not in the league of a Rodeo Clown ;)

Are they employees of the club or self employed? And what ever the answer is is the case for all teams?

Thanks for your reply :)

{Ed002's Note - employees.}
