Away from the Coutinho/ Can debacle, I'd like Ed001 (or others) 's opinion on something.

I was just watching the premier league years for the 1992-93 season, in which Liverpool had a dreadful season, almost getting themselves relegated 3 years after winning the title.

I saw in a post by you a few weeks ago that the 1988 FA cup final signalled the beginning of the end for Liverpool's dominance.

So my question is, do you think Liverpool's decline in the 90s was in part started by the poor long-term planning of the club in the late 80s and then accelerated by Souness being reckless, or is the blame solely on Souness?

{Ed001's Note - the club was in a mess, hence why Souness came in. They had lost the scout that brought all the best players in, then Hillsborough crushed Dalglish (completely understandably) and the idiots on the board made matters worse by not allowing the great man to have a break and sort himself out. Souness was more of a symptom of the problems rather than the problem itself.}

Souness tried to change too much too soon and did buy some rubbish as well as getting shot of too many older players too soon, although he did give opportunity’s to a lot of youngsters that season due to shedding of those elder players, some of whom went on to be good players.
Barnes missed a lot of games and really wasn’t the same when he came back.
Any team with Torben Piecnik and Tanner as CB would struggle.

Who was the scout we lost ed001 out of interest? Thank you.

{Ed001's Note - the great Geoff Twentyman, probably the best scout of all time, certainly Liverpool's best ever.}

Is being a good scout genetic? Because his son world as a radio presenter and I'm sure we could tempt him!

In all seriousness, i think our main reason for decline was just the exact same as United's. We lost the entire spine of our team in a few seasons. Grobelaar, Hansen, Nicol, Souness, Whelan, Dalglish, Rush etc. Just in the same way United couldn't cope with losing VDS, Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic, Scholes, Giggs, and Ronaldo over a few years.

If you lose one star, you can kind of battle through it. When your whole team crashes down inside 5 years though, you're doomed. Maybe if we hadn't lost Dalglish, we could've rebuilt? But the team was already shot to pieces. I wasn't alive then, so this is all analysis based of historic accounts of what happened. It's gutting for me though because at 23, I've never seen us win the league and have to listen to stories of glory which just make me jealous!

{Ed025's Note - success goes in cycles MK, im sure liverpool will have their day again...im guessing 2045 or something like that..

So assuming Liverpool's cycle is every 40 years, Everton won't win a major trophy again until about 2085? 😉.

2045 Ed025? Around the time that Everton win another cup then?! ;-)

I was just entering my teens when we won our last league title, so followed the events of the early 90s quite closely (and with tears for the fall from the top of the perch! ) . I completely understand why Kenny had to leave, but if he hadn't, it would've made for a far more even 90s between us at Manure.

Brilliant one, Ed25.

{Ed025's Note - just an educated guess brover..
