Had Gerrard made that pass for the Newcastle goal it would have been referred to as a 'World Class defence-splitting pass'. Because the defenders were Liverpool everyone is looking for an excuse for blame. The fact is that Matip realised that there was a mistake and got back to correct it. He was extremely unlucky to play the ball against the attacker's shin. Joselu knew nothing about and scored the luckiest goal that he will ever score and let's face he doesn't score many. It may have been lucky but it still counts for as much as the brilliant goal from Coutinho. Sometimes football isn't fair.

Oh come on ben you know that isn't true. Matip did well to get back true but there was no way that you can say it's okay for that line to be doing anything but dropping back when that ball is it. It's a defensive error, and a bad one when we were under absolutely no pressure whatsoever. The ball was well hit, pin point accuracy but that does not mean it should have done the damage it did.

Well they could have stepped forward and played him offside?

Spot on, Hijkle and Ron. Ben, fact of the matter is that both CB's were not just ball watching, they seemed to be match watching. They were busy watching the game the same way we as fans, watch games and completely forgot they were IN the game as they had no clue where Joselu was and the space btw them was like a gulf. If not, how can one explain how when Shelvey picked up the ball, everyone in the stadium and at home knew the pass was coming YET our CB's were nowhere to be found. They don't play the offside nor drop deep. They just stand there on their heels like tourists.

Matip did get back which is an improvement in itself as Ed01 and many others have been roasting him for being lazy in this regard BUT it should never have come to that as Newcastle of NO danger to us until injury time where Diame almost scored. This is why Klopp is losing his mind on the touch line.

As soon as Shelvey gets the ball the centrebacks should have reacted. If you watch the goal again they're square on and not on the half turn, they're static and they're too far apart. The same was true for one of the city goals. Yes coaching can address this, but they're experienced players and not youngsters so they should know this already. It was a decent run and good pass, but the defending was dreadful.

Have you guys ever asked why it was so easy to get through. I replayed that goal over and over again. We were playing high up and our defensive midfielder was nowhere to block that guys "sublime" pass. Everyone wants to just put the defenders down but never look to the DM he needs to cover when the wing backs push forward. He can't wander off and get in on the action. He must play his role.

{Ed001's Note - it doesn't matter about that, if the defence are not reacting to the loss of the ball by getting closer and dropping off, then we are always going to lose silly goals. Yes the midfield should have been in and around him, but that does not excuse how bad the defenders did.}
