Yep when hendo was out for the last few months of the season, Emre carried us to the top 4 in the 6 position. That's his best position, he's more suited to that role than hendo. Hendo is better playing box to box where he can play on instinct rather than constantly slowing things down.

Deploying Can in the holding role will take his best attribute away and that is his powerful drive forward with the ball. He skip pass players so easily. He is no way near to Eric Dier. Can also has issues of positional discipline.

Agree with both - think he might make a few mistakes while he learns the position but he'll be a beast there in the long run.

{Ed025's Note - but will he be at liverpool in the long run SG?, square pegs in round holes for me mate..

Spot on, Sahko. Can already did that last season and was brilliant. He shut down Arsenal at home, scored the winner at Burnley and was boiss at WH and at Stoke. That is actually the position he really wants to play and he should play there as a fixed position while Hendo can play ahead of him in a deep midfield 2 with Cou in the no. 10 position.

Clearly, the midfield 3 f Can, Hendo and Wiji is not working cos they are literally standing on each other's toes, not knowing when to press, who gets to press and who gets to sit deep when the other presses. They are all over the place right now hence, a structure needs to be put in place cos what we're doing right now is causing us problems.

Sorry but I don't agree, I don't see Can as being good defensively, he's big and strong but that's about it. To me he doesn't seem to have the discipline or intelligence to play defensive midfield on a long term basis, you need to be able to pop up in the right place at the right time and be able to read the game properly, I just don't see that skill set in him, not having a go at him, I just don't think he is suited to it at all.

He's much better as a box to box or in a slightly more forward role, besides I think that's where he wants to play so I can't see him wanting to stay if we change his position.

Don't you remember him playing in defence? It was a huge mistake and a complete waste of his talent.

He lacks the discipline to be effective in that role. As 25 says, square peg in a round hole.

I agree with Mikey. Can's biggest drawback is his positioning. You simply cannot deploy him to the deeper role. Stand united was right, All we have is inifinte B2B midfielders and no dedicated deep midfielder.

For question Ed25.if he's not going to be long term then why switch him and Hendo, just wait for Keita to step into his role, but if he were to stay I think his long term position is from deep.

Actually if it were me, right now given the problems we've had protecting the back 4 I'd go for both Hendo and 1 of Can/ Gini sitting deep and put Coutinho at no.10. Hendo and Can can then take turns breaking forward into space knowing the other can cover.

{Ed025's Note - keita is the answer SG but hes not coming for another year, the problem is now and for me neither can or hendo are disciplined enough for that role imo mate..

ED025, Kieta is not the answer either. I am
Sorry but he is no holding mid. You play him there then you take away his goals / assists and his forward runs for which you are actually paying the money for.

{Ed025's Note - i see what your saying harry and that is certainly his main brief, i think he can play anywhere though and depending on the opposition could play as a DM as well, but thats just my thinking mate..

Keita is a dynamic footballer. he is neither a DM or CM or ACM. He is all of those things rolled up in one, a Kante with more pace, skill, dribbling ability, pace, shooting ability (see his goal vs Hamburg at the weekend), goals and assists so if need be. Devastating player. Whether he is a DM or not is irrelevant as he is that and a lot more which is what a lot of teams are looking for right now as Kante is the blueprint now for such players.
