Lots of people 'stunned', 'gutted' and 'devastated' we haven't signed a new centre back.
I think it's great news for Joe Gomez, he has a fantastic opportunity to make that position his own. He's currently picking up experience as a full back, getting his match fitness up. He has all the attributes he just doesn't have the experience. There will be no more in-comings before January so he has a good chance to get some game time.

If we'd signed a £70m VVD then this opportunity would be gone. I'm excited for the lad, I hope he saves us £70m and he could become a long term solution for us. He seems level headed and could be a future captain if he is handled the right way!

Agree. Gomez just been made England under 21s captain also, really think he had a bright future.

So how long will it take for Joe Gomez to bed in. When we are out of the champions league, league cup, race for top 4? We can put all the positive spin we want on it but not getting a CB in is a big mistake.

Agree with Ron, let's hope he gets a chance and takes it .

Sort of agree. Ideally I would have loved Vvd to directly replace lovren. Even though klopp has said he is happy with our cbs we know he definitely isn't happy with liven. Lovren to have been moved on immediately or maybe January would have been perfect. Leaving gomez with the same opportunities.

I have no issues with Joe Gomez. I am very happy that he will get a chance in centre back and right back both this season and going forward. However, Lovren and Klavan.

Those are the two names that strike fear into my heart and they are both closer than Gomez to the centre back position. How can these two, Lovren in particular, be our second and third choice if we wish to push for a top 4 place!?

How is Lovren, the most inconsistent and error stricken centre back in the whole league, supposed to shore up our defence!? He is a liability, the fact that we have failed to strengthen in his position is incompetence of the highest order. We wasted months waiting for Southampton to decide Van Dijk's fate when they clearly said he would not be leaving. We had no backup option, ala Salah for Brandt.

We sent out feelers to Koulibaly and Mammama but they both came to nothing. So, it seems we have decided to stick with Lovren instead. That is just great. Fantastic news.

Now, Salah, Mane and Firmino have to score 3 or 4 goals every single game to stand a chance of winning matches. Lovren will always cost us goals, Mignolet also has it in him, Klavan is unreliable, Gomez is young but because of this lacks concentration at times, Matip is a good defender who at times looks poor because he is having to cover areas that both Lovren and Moreno have vacated.

It is so poor from Liverpool, in regards to strengthening a well-known weakness. Bringing in Salah and Solanke is great for squad depth, Coutinho staying could go either way depending on how he behaves this season. Although, personally, I want Coutinho gone. He has disrespected this club and behaved appallingly by feigning injury and not making himself available for important matches. The little rat will be welcomed back with open arms by the fans though and, in all honesty, I cannot understand why. Good, great player even, but he cannot be trusted.

If we don't sign VVD tonight I do not think we will sign him at all. Liverpool have a habit that they don't return for previous targets. I can only think of Salah that has bucked that trend.
