I suppose he is near right you're team do play in blue Ed002, or am I jumping to conclusions thinking you are a Chelsea fan?

{Ed002's Note - I am not a "fan" of any side. I do however generally support Chelsea, but I don't care if they win or lose and rarely do I bother going to games - although I may go to the CL game in Baku as I have not been there before (although it is possible that they could be back there again for the 2019 Champions League Final). But "fan", no.}

Question for ed002, What is the difference between a fan and a supporter in your eyes? I see you say you support Chelsea but aren't a fan and I'm wondering if there's different ways of people interpreting it.

In my eyes a supporter is someone who helps the club, contributes to their club etc in some sort of way (season ticket holders, fans groups etc, regulars, people who put into the club) and a fan is someone who follows a club in some sort of way (watching, listening, reading) but I always struggle to explain the difference.

Thanks in advance.

{Ed002's Note - At last a decent question - thanks TIA19.

The word "fan" derives from the word "fanatic" which would be someone who could be described as zealously keen on their team (e.g. Liverpool, Everton, Third Lanark), a particular player (e.g. Ronaldo, Messi and Mignolet will no doubt have "fan" clubs) or perhaps the singer from a beat music combo such as the Beatles, Cliff Richard or, favorites of mine, the Frumious Bandersnatch.

Supporters tend to be much more calm and cheerful people (not like the vein-popping, eye-bulging, tattooed, knuckle-dragging, bonehead fans whose ugly slobbering faces are pressed against the windows of the opposition coaches). They often have nice cream heavy-knit jumpers and own lilac-colored labradoodles that they are teaching to talk. They often carry very small combs that they use to groom their mustaches and spend Sunday lunchtimes in small country pubs drinking ale from mugs rather than glasses.}

That reply had the perfect balance between genuine opinion and sarcasm. I personally think you just described the difference between a 'die-hard' fan and a leisurely fan. But I can see your logic, cheers!
Based on your response I think I'm a supporter of Liverpool, win lose or draw I'll try support, help and follow them, calmly and cheerfully. But I am a fan of the actual team/ players/ manager. sometimes I'm not a fan of the team (when Hodgson was in charge, as an example) but I still supported them, but I wasn't exactly fanatical about him.
Cheers.

{Ed002's Note - Good for you. You shouldn't need the double-knit today as you head down to the Fox and Houds at Barnston for your lunchtime pint.}
