To be fair to Mignolet, the only thing he knows about his defence is that they are also dodgy. It doesn't help him.

{Ed001's Note - why doesn't it help him? A top keeper should be relying on himself and saving the situation as De Gea has done for a few years at United. Never bothered him or affected his game that his defence was dodgy. So you are not being fair to Mignolet, just pointing out how bad he actually is that he can't see it as an opportunity to shine.}

I'm a bit surprised Migs has been GK in all our games so far. Figured some rotation was due v Palace, or that Karius/ Ward would be our designated CL-keeper.

Edds, in a recent post you said you would go with Gomez also. After the effort and time it has taken our club to get back in top 4 and champs league would you really risk all that on an unproven (at top level) goalie and CB for a season? It's a big risk in my opinion.
I'm not saying that both players won't or can't make it, but surely we should be using domestic cup games (and to cover injuries) to blood these players in.
We need a new goalkeeper, we have had the time and money available to buy a new keeper. We got the young German last season and he hasn't been able to get in front of Migs, that should tell us everything we need to know.
Pick either him or Ward as backup/ up and coming keeper and sell Migs, then go and buy a solid keeper, doesn't have to be world class but solid. Begovic would have been a good shout for a few years.

{Ed001's Note - sorry but when you say things like 'that should tell us everything we need to know' it just makes you sound ridiculous. Karius got in front of Migs, it is the fans and media that were the problem, along with weak management. It was far too early to judge him.

As for risk, it is a far bigger risk to stick with dross who are costing us every game. May as well take a chance on kids who might cost us in some games than stick with what is definitely costing us.

Pointless pointing Ward or Karius as back up and getting rid of Mignolet. Better to use Migs as back up and let those two get experience elsewhere. What is the good in leaving them stuck on the bench gaining nothing but splinters in their backsides?}

The crappy mognolet did save some blinders against Hoffeinham in the first leg! Can't dispute that!

{Ed001's Note - I can, because I never saw any blinders at all. Unless they were blinders as in a blind man could have saved them? I have never seen him save anything that I would not expect a keeper at this level to save, that is since he arrived at Sunderland until now. He simply does not pull out special saves. Some decent saves, yes, but nothing special.}

Whatever happened to not changing a winning team? Not sure why the page has just exploded with anti-migs posts.

{Ed001's Note - Klopp has made changes for every game this season, so not sure why you are even posting this? If he was picking a settled side and the results were coming, fine, but he is not so it is not relevant.}

To place the expectations from a keeper into perspective.
Every time Split got a shot off yesterday Pickford berate those in front. He has high expectations of them and wants them to do more
Getting bawled out by your GK is annoying and embarrassing - you soon try and rectify it.

I'm sorry but we've conceded 3 goals vs Watford, we were extremely lucky to concede only 1 vs Hoff away (could have been 3 or 4), and conceded two vs Hoff at home.

Any way you look at it, that's not great, and our attack is yet again papering over defensive frailties. All those arguments about 'we defend as a team' are true, but they don't mean our defenders are any good either.

As far as keeper goes, in those games Migs has made a number of basic errors like failing to clear corners that dropping 5 yards away from his goal (vs Watford) to dropping the ball from a basic catch, but the main issue is his organisational and communication skills remain poor. Even if he does make some decent shot stops from distance which look good, any keeper at this level should make those.

I'm frankly surprised that we're starting the season with him in goal, I was convinced we'd start with Karius so have no idea what Klopp and Achterberg are up to. Agree with Ed 100% that Karius has not been given any real opportunity to prove himself and also there's no point in Ward sitting on the bench either (he could have been first choice in a Huddersfield side playing in the PL which would have been brilliant for his development) . We've well and truly messed this up unless there's a cunning plan we're all not aware of.

What I'll add though is this is not just the keeper. There is panic across our back 5 whenever Migs, Lovren and Moreno play together. The all have their moments inidividually but together it's a tragi-comedy.

The only decent defensive performance we've really had so far was vs CP with Klavan and Robertson in defence. That's not a coincidence and so I'm also shocked Klopp has regressed to starting with the back 4 that has been tried and tested and failed for the last 18 months or more.

Even if arguing we're waiting for VVD and perhaps Robertson to be fit, why not at least have started Milner at LB and given Karius a shot in Europe?

Love Klopp but it's baffling to see how we haven't addressed this yet.

I've never met a GK who was "nice" on the pitch. When I played amateur league footie, our GK was the only one on the pitch allowed to bawl us out, strict instructions from the coach. If you don't wanna get a strip torn off you by the GK, get a backbone and do your job or get off the pitch.

I am sorry but Mignolet is one of the best when it comes to One on One with a player! He has a lot of issues but when it comes to one on one he is simply up there. Saving penalties is not like drinking a coffee! It requires focus and real determination!
If We had someone to coach him how to kick a bloody ball then he is up there with the some brilliant keeper!

{Ed025's Note - no hes not harry, he is an accident waiting to happen and part of liverpools defensive problems is that the back 4 dont trust him, makes some great saves i agree but does not command his area and is poor in the air, he can look very good at times mate but hes hardly jordan pickford now is he..

Ed, more a comment on you than Klopp, you've always said before you don't change a winning side. Just surprised at the change.

{Ed001's Note - because Klopp keeps changing it anyway so no point.}

Not in favor of Mignolet and never was! He has a lot of issues which I have mentioned but he has one good quality and that is when he is one on one with the a player! He should have been moved on a lot earlier for someone like Butland!

Just think we need to be a bit more ruthless with some of our decisions. Mignolet is not good enough and should be out. Let Karius develop into a top keeper. Same for some of the other average players - cut the loses on them and get them out to let the others come thru - Sakho (cut his price if you don't want him), Moreno (should have gone this summer) and Mignolet should be sold. Feel for Ward though.

13.) 25 Aug 2017
25 Aug 2017 09:07:44
If our defence was a little less dodgy then migs would have less penalties to face in the first place.
Saying he's good at saving penalties is like saying I'm good at picking up broken eggs off the floor, if I just didn't drop them in the first place, I wouldn't have broken eggs to pick up.

Something SGRed mentioned above has got me thinking and I was wondering what your thoughts are ed.
Last season we shoehorned Milner into the left-back position because we could no longer tolerate the mistakes Moreno was constantly throwing up. So one of the key positions to strengthen over the summer was a left-back.
We signed Robertson, who may prove to be an excellent buy, but he is not quite up to our pace yet. That's fair enough, I don't mind that. But while we're waiting for him to catch up why have we reverted back to Moreno? Surely Milner is the solid choice to start until our first choice pick is ready?
Which leads me on to my question. Do you think Milner and Klopp had an agreement (gentleman's agreement and not contractual) that he would cover us for left back last season but he wanted to be back up to his normal midfield position asap?
Cheers as always.

{Ed002's Note - Because Moreno did enough in pre-season to impress Klopp.}

A keepers job is to save shots. No? Mignolet is only doing what he's paid to do. All this nonsense if he's a good shot stopper is not true. He doesn't save shots sometimes that are saveable. How often does DDG pull off a world class save for Man Utd? Do you see Mignolet pulling off saves of the same standard? Absolutely not! And for the record, that penalty save in the first leg. he could have stood still and caught that, it was an awful pen!

Ed25, Pickford ain't that great either so comparing him to Migs is a pathetically low bar.

{Ed025's Note - i think you will find out that hes top 4 in the premiership bingo, and let me tell you there is no comparison between him and migs mate...one of them is a dodgy keeper who is as quiet as a mouse, poor in the air and frightens his back four to death...the other is jordan pickford..
