I can't see that we are, it's largely the same squad with the same glaring problems as last year that didn't come close to winning the league or win any trophies and we've got more games to contend with next year. Unless Chelsea, City, United and Spurs will all have to have a comeplete catastrophe like when Leicester won the league.

Players should improve every season.
For a team to get better. They don't always have to buy new players. Sometimes keeping a almost similar squad, but with players improving and maturing, the squad gets better.
Last season Lallana and Firminho imprived from the seasin before. Coutinho scored more goals last season than the season prior to that.
So just with those 3, we had a better side last season than we had the season before.

Off course we can compete but we would need to be fortunate on the injury side and hope the players don't lose their form too much. Also that the defence play like they did towards the end of last season. Do all that and we are in with a shout but its a big ask to go all season with few injuries and keep form. Personally, after saying all that, i think we will struggle.

I agree with frankly here, we haven't been efficient enough this window and clearly haven't targeted many players in positions we should have been looking to strengthen. It's just another window indicating the problems we have with the scouting/ recruitment team. Salah is a very good buy that clearly improves the first 11. Solanke is a striker with awesome potential who I think we will see a good amount this season, however it was in a position that wasn't a priority and where we already had good players (firmino sturridge, origi, ings) . Robertson for many, just seems like a cheap option, an ok player that doesn't really improve the position, or at least that is yet to be seen. I'll back him of course but I feel the same about this transfer as I did with the Karius transfer.

We haven't even been efficient if clearing the dead wood, our business as a whole has been as bad or worse than summers gone by. This was the summer to get a small group of players that improved the first 11 and get rid of players that brought in decent fees (sahko, markovic etc) . If I have an aim for this season in correlation to the current squad, I'd be happy if we maintained our top 4 status, not sure if that's the aim or not but our transfer dealings indicate that to be the case. Sorry if this sounds pessimistic but I can't be the only one concerned with our shortcomings so far.
