Hi eds, one player who I really rate is Hernandez. I seem to recall we were after him a few seasons back but nothing happened. Any reason why we didn't go for him this season after being put up for sale. There's no way we would have missed out to West Ham if we threw in a bid right?

{Ed001's Note - we don't bid for players because you rate them.}

I don't think he'd have suited our style. He's someone who'll 9 times out of 10, put a chance away but offers very little apart from that. I think he'll do well alongside Andy Carroll when fit. Neither of them are ones to do a lot of running though and that could be to the team's detriment.

{Ed025's Note - yeah epic...you dont want anyone who scores 9 out of 10 chances he gets mate..

Heh Heh. I don't get what you're saying Ed. I think he's a decent poacher, but the game has moved on a bit and strikers need a bit more in their game than just be able to convert a chance when it comes to them.

{Ed025's Note - really epic?, a player who scores goals is worth their weight in gold mate, forget about tracking back..

Agree with eds on this. All I would judge my strikers on is scoring goals. Firmino for me is not a striker, I would have Hernandez as striker every day of the week. Bobby is better sat behind a striker. We create chances and the striker scores them. what more can you ask for?

{Ed001's Note - Hernandez does not score 9 out of 10 chances and Firmino ensures we create a lot more chances, whereas Hernandez would ensure we created less.}

A few years back while my manager was giving me stick for not converting enough chances so I decided to do some research and at the time the striker with the best chance conversion ratio was higuain while he was at madrid and it was roughly 1 in 4. I politely told my manager as one of the better strikers in the league and certainly in the team if he stopped playing defenders in midfield they might create some chances meaning I wouldn't have to take a higher percentage of chances than higuian for us to score a few. Unsurprisingly the defence that season was great the problem was there was no balance.

With Coutinho, Firmino, Salah and Mane with great technical ability and incredible chance creation, surely all we need for a striker at this stage is just to slot 9 out of 10 chances in the back of the net. Not finishing our chances was one of our main issues in the last two seasons!

{Ed025's Note - im with you donnie..

Disagree ed025. When you have a striker like hernendaz who offers very little in buildup play, the team will struggle with creating. Sure Firmino might not score as much but if he's allround play results in nore chances created for others and himself then the team will benefit, which ultimately is the end goal. Think about it this way, last season Everton had a goalscorer in Lukaku but if the opponents stopped Lukaku then they stopped Everton. I'd rather the team not rely on just one goalscorer.

{Ed025's Note - your entitled to your opinion dilakh but there is a reason utd paid a record fee for lukaku..he puts the ball in the net, its the most difficult job in football mate..

Forget Hernandez but are you seriously curving your argument to go into protecting are poor striker firmino by saying tracking back is more important.

Goals are. End of.

25 goal a season striker over any amount of running. Although probably all the top strikers do run. There probably a lot more prolific because they save there energy for when it actually matters rather than of tracked 50 yards back to then not be up top when the opportunity is there.

What's wrong with use.

We have had some of t he best strikers and near all our success with them. Stop justify - frankly - a poor excuse for a striker because he runs a lot.

I could run a lot if that's all the strikers job is.

{Ed025's Note - absolutely SS..

This argument is going nowhere lol if he is scoringb 9 out 10, isn't it completely irrelecant how involved he is elsewhere on the pitch? Why be involved in build-up if 9 other players can do that so he can score a goal? I think you've over-thought klopp's idea of players being inter-changable and able to do various things on the pitch. There's nothing wrong with having a striker who only scores goals.

{Ed025's Note - it works for me faith..

Hernandez might not have the physical build we may need, having Mane, Firmino, Coutinho and Lallana all being quite small built (relative to most CBs) .

From what I have seen, Solanke has very decent finishing as well as quite a physical presence which would also be v. beneficial for our lineup. I would like to see how he turns out.

So if lukaku scored 20plus but everton still scored less than us. he is lazy, doesn't defend properly and in klopp and guardiola system defence starts from the first man. i agree firmino needs to score more goals and he probably will, but i know who i would have in my team beetwen him and lukaku. and ed025 the hardest thing in football is to play it simple and create chances over and over ;) footy is evolving and strikers are slowly dying. new ideas of 5,6 all round good pacey attacking players running in behind and swithing positions is the future, and luckily we have the manager who sees it.

{Ed025's Note - footy is simple mandzo...the team who puts the ball in the net the most wins, the tippy tappy passy passy days are gone mate, its high tempo direct stuff now thats effective...try and keep up mate..

I think we're drawing a very long bow if we're going to lay blame at Lukaku's feet for their deficiencies.
