Morning eds, I'm wondering how football sidesteps freedom of employment laws? Why can't one player quit one 'job' and move to another?

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea what "freedom of employment laws" are.}

In the UK at least, employees on fixed term contracts (which I assume covers professional footballers) have the right to terminate their contract early.

What is it that stops a footballer terminating their contract and going to work with another club? I'm assuming that football has a workaround that prevents this.

{Ed002's Note - The contracts are there to protect both sides and are covered by regulations from FIFA - but there are provisions under the Webster Ruling that allows a player to buy themselves out of a contract. A player can refuse to play and terminate their contract but they cannot then simply join another club as their registration belongs to the club they left.}

A contract for a start.

I would have thought it has something to do with the contract and unless the terms are breached you are stuck to the terms unless both parties agree.
