Reflecting on the Suso post below (if indeed this is posted to Banter! ), Ed001 is implying, quite rightly, that we hampered his development and may, ultimately, have led to him not fulfilling his potential.

Leave aside those talents who self destructed through their own ill-discipline, injuries or lack of application, what other young players, not just ours, had their development hampered, permanently or at least significantly, by not being treated right by their 'parent clubs'?

I can think of plenty who DID make it because their clubs let them go too early - Pique (Man Utd) and Fabregas (Barca) spring to mind, as well as our own PipCo.

But I'd be fascinated to hear of those talents that fell by the wayside through mismanagement, from people like the Eds who are much closer to the game than me.

{Ed001's Note - Pique and Fabregas were not let go too early, it is a difference in law that allowed English clubs to swoop in for them. In England you can sign a professional contract at the age of 17, in Spain you have to be 18. They left Barca for an extra year's earnings.}

Aha, didn't know that. Thanks Ed. Any players you can think of in the same boat as Suso?

{Ed001's Note - go through the youth teams of Premier League teams over the last few years and you will get a long list of names of youngsters that have been stifled.}

Your all at fault for demanding success.

A young player before he even gets on the bench is the next gerrard.

We can't handle one loss or one bad bit of form. A player has 2 or 3 bad games and its curtains.

You all want success in the league abd its just not as much of a chance if your full of inexperienced young players.

Also though its been driven out of our culture. The owners of the football clubs are not longer interested in our young players but more the abilty to have a successful franchise. If the coaches where encouraged from above and directed away from say signing a klavan and told to use gonez or signing a markovic instead of using ibe then maybe we would see some improvments.

The way it is only the super talented will get through.

Even someone who did everyrhing possible in rashford is about to be replaced by morata. Why are the owners not saying right we want rashford up top were not signing morata, he's only more experienced because he has been allowed to play.

Players like lemar, mbappe, fabinho, bakayogo, silva, sidibe where all jist taken a chance on. Tbey where good players but allowrd to play.

Kane, ali, rose, walker, mason, bentaleb, shaw, chambers etc where all played by poch. Now look at most of them.

I disagree with Ed. LFC did not stifle Suso, at the time he left he was not good enough. It was his wish to leave as he wanted a first team place he was not ready for. Obviously he has come out of his shell since leaving but it did not happen instantly.

How can you make a comment like that about young players being stifled. Just because they do not make the grade does not mean they have been stifled. Most young players stop improving somewhere in their teens. Sometimes it is due to physical development, sometimes they lack the mental strength to push on and other times they just lack the appetite. The vast majority of young players at clubs are given the opportunity to develop, obviously it is in the clubs interest this to happen.

{Ed001's Note - I worry about anyoen without the sense to understand the stifle comment. Pointless discussing it with you if you are so clueless that you think players stop developing in their teens! Try learning something before typing, as you are looking a fool right now with that idiotic comment! It is simply not even close to being true and shows incredible ignorance of the reality of human development.}

What I'm not understanding is how we stifled him, at 18 he was given good exposure with the first team, at 19 he got a good loan that that saw him play regularly in la liga. He's arguably had a much better introduction to top flight football than any of our current crop of youth players and he's now playing at a high level. Seems to me his development was well managed.

{Ed001's Note - because he was constantly lied to, at 18 he could have had a good loan, but was told he would be a regular in our team. When he came back off his loan, he was again given the promise that if he stayed he would be given regular starts. Again never happened. He would play well enough for a large number of fans to get excited by him and then not be seen again for months, how is that not stifling him? If a young player comes in and shines, then doesn't get seen again for months, that is stifling them. You are not rewarding them for playing well, so they are not gaining by the experience of playing in the first team. In fact they are learning the wrong things, as they are learning that a good game does not get you more games.}

There are loads of players who develop later after dropping down the leagues.

Look at Vardy for an example plus there is many, many more in every country.

Managers today will usually opt to bring in a 26 year old finished product and try to get 3-4 good years out of him, The managers job depends on results and many see young lads as a risk too far.

David Gold mentioned earlier that West Ham could no longer been known as the academy of football for the above reason .
Out of the 1 million hours of football played last season, less than 6000 were played by teenagers.

That tells its own story.

Selling Coutinho was Inter's recent mistake as they said. After some years we will say the same thing about Suso!
