Great read ed! Remember seeing the stat about shots on target against goals conceded and thinking "Anyone who supports KFC knows why this is meaningless".

As we don't allow many efforts but tend to have a few lapses in concentration which results in giving away a very good goal scoring opportunity (think Klavan's last clanger) . id rather our team have 3 one-on-ones created a game than 30 efforts from distance or tight angles.

{Ed001's Note - cheers Roland. I remember a season where we scored a low number of goals but hit the woodwork more than any other team as well. There are so many little things that can skew stats that you have to be really careful. Like I said, it needs more data over a longer period, but that is not possible as the seasons do not have enough matches in them for that to be relevant. By the time you get enough matches to remove all the quirks, you have out of date info from past seasons.}

I'm the same.
Last time I bought a bargain bucket I thought to myself "shots on target vs goals conceded, what does it mean? "

Stats are good to look at but will never really prove the ability of the actual player.

It is like that moronic stat which was released many years ago where Leon Britton had a better pass completion rate than Xavi. That obviously made Britton a better passer of the ball than Xavi :-O

Just because striker A has a better strike rate than striker B does not mean striker A has better technique.

Just because Skrtel had better stats than our other CB's meant absolutely bugger all when using ones eyes on matchday to see that he was completely inept.
