The BBC are reporting that the Cameroonian fa can ask Fifa to suspend Matip domestically during the AFCON if he refuses to represent them. Never heard of this happening before has anyone else? What do we reckon are the chances of Fifa going along with it? Slim I hope.

{Ed002's Note - It has been asked on plenty of occasions for different competitions - but the FAs do not have powers like that (unless the player has been pretending to be injured) without a legal challenge.}

It's bizarre in my opinion. It should be an individuals choice who they play for, presumably there's no contract between matip and Cameroon. The punishment should simply be Cameroon decide he's never to be picked again.

That basically is the punishment. Frankly I don't get why the international clubs care so much - if I was a manager (especially internationally) I'd never want to force or convince anyone to play for me. I'd much rather have XI on the field who were ecstatic to be there, proud of their call up and willing to give everything to win without thought.

Ed - has something happened with the Cameroon team in the past that has made players not want their call ups? Cause I've heard that several players including Nyom from Watford were making themselves unavailable not just Matip. It's a shame for international football so was just curious as to why it was focused on Cameroon seemingly.

{Ed002's Note - No.}

I thought there was an history of failed payments to players due to disputes between Fecafoot and the Cameroon Sports Ministry. or at least I remember some headlines going back a few years where the players did not receive payments and refused to then play a match in Algeria.

{Ed002's Note - It is true of plenty of African sides.}
