Matip being injured is a massive loss for us. He has been a rock at the back for us and has brought the leadership we have been lacking for a very long time.

Ed001, do you think Klopp has made a mistake by bringing back Mignolet. Time and time again he has proven that he ain't good enough to be our number 1.

On the other hand, it could be that Klopp has decided to put Mignolet in the shop window. Pretty sure I read the other day that Ed002 said Mignolet will be moved on this coming summer.

This coming summer will be a massively important one for us. All we really need is a LB and CB for the first team and a RB to either cover for Clyne or take his spot in the first team. Clyne has improved a bit so let's see how things go with him.

Midfield we are stocked and depending on what happens with Sturridge, Ings and Coutinho, I cannot see us making too many changes when it comes to our attack. If Coutinho leaves we are going to need to find a proper replacement for him, not somebody for the bench.

Looking forward to the match vs our neighbours. Get in boys, all 3 points please!

{Ed001's Note - it is nothing to do with the shop window for Mignolet, it is all about trying to protect Karius. Only time will tell if it was a mistake.

Personally I feel the wrong person was cut, this is a short term attempt to cover a serious weakness in personnel. Our goalkeeping coaching needs to be improved.}

Thanks for the reply Ed.

Wonder why nothing has been done about the goalkeeping coach. Karius has done well so feel for him that he was benched. It would have been good to see how he coped with pressure and kept him in the team to see whether he has the ability to thrive under pressure.

Ten matches not going to be enough to show whether Karius has what it takes. Mignolet has had over 3 seasons and could not prove he is fit to be our no 1. Strange decision by Klopp, let's hope it does not ruin the great position we found ourselves in League wise.

{Ed001's Note - short term it is unlikely to be an issue, it is the long term effects that are the problem. The best keepers make mistakes, have bad runs, then come out the other side, like De Gea. Karius has now had the bad run, but no chance to work through it. Though, to be fair, with the troubles we have with the coaching side of goalkeeping, being kept in would probably have only completely destroyed his confidence and career.}

I think benching Karius is not protection at all. Karius is the type of player that need to be playing and feel he is important, benching him will destroy his confidence. And mignolet will continue to stay complacent.

{Ed001's Note - Mignolet is far from complacent.}

Mignolet complacent being dropped start of the season for Karius who is much younger, just arrived at the club and less inexperienced?

That was a clear indication that Mignolet is not our long term number 1 and to be quite honest, Mignolet knows that.

Never been a fan of Mignolet from the moment I realized he can't kick a banana let alone a football. Benching Karius hardly makes any sense to me and it looks like he is warming for a long time than expected.

I agree with Ed01 on this, it's been mentioned on here for a few years now that the GK coach needs replacing. The keepers we've had since he came have either failed to improve or declined.

How can you blame the GK coach for Karius's errors?
Karius has been here for a very short time, you don't suddenly forget how to catch a ball or position yourself for a set piece over night.
It's too early to blame the GK coach over Karius, but he hasn't done anything for Mignolet.

Some of you need to take off the rose tinted glasses.
Karius has hardly pulled up any trees since he got into the team and certainly doesn't deserve the messiah treatment some of you are giving him.
Don't get me wrong, longer term he may well turn out to be a decent keeper and I agree that Migs is of limited ability. However, I agree with the gaffer on this one and support the reintroduction of Migs. In hindsight, Karius should have been transitioned into the team via cup games initially. After all, transition is something we should be pretty good at doing now - we've had ten years practicing it!
On for the Eds - what does Klopp (and the club in general) see in Achterburg that you and others don't? If he is so poor a coach why hasn't he been moved on?
Fingers crossed for a good performance and three points on Monday.

{Ed001's Note - who has ever said Karius is the messiah? All anyone has ever said is that he has not had time to prove himself one way or the other. It is this kind of post that just provokes conflict and discord because of that petty little jibe that is completely untrue.}

I agree with Ron on the technique of catching a ball but things like lining up a wall will come directly from the coaching staff. If he's doing it wrong it will more likely be the coaches fault rather than his as he's just doing as he's told to in training.

Yes you're right bobbyf, we need to take off our rose tinted glasses. Our young new foreign keeper, recently back from injury hasn't shown himself to be amongst the best in the league in the whole 10 games he's had. Get rid of the false messiah. All our new signing should only be given 10 games lol.

I think for the rest of the season this could work. By klopps words it almost sounds like if mignolet now makes a mistake karius back in and so on.
I don't think it overly effects our defence which keeper plays certainly not to a level impossible to adapt to.
So essentially for the rest of the season you say to both players you don't reach a level of performance any week you're out.
Both keepers pushed to play their best karius also not taking on all the pressure of being number one in his first season, but if he is ready he also has the chance to show and prove it.
Then we evaluate in the summer.

It's sad that people are now saying 2mouths into his Liverpool life and people are saying his not any good . Just wow . Some people need time and boy should be playing . Mignolet has made mistakes for 3 years .

Keeper's games generally peak around the ages 27-35 IMO. Klopp is 100% spot on saying Karius is an important part of our future. He's too young to write off, I agree with ed001 he needs a better coach to help him improve.
With respect to the dropping of Karius I think Klopp handled the situation poorly. I think the guy is great but he dropped a bit of a clanger by indulging the press and the critics. Sadly, once he'd responded to press and Neville criticism, he had to take Karius out of the firing line because his every move was being scrutinised. Another mistake would have killed his confidence, started a media witch-hunt and caused the manager to be undermined.

Karius now needs to work on his game and rediscover his form. He need not be out for long, just long enough for Migs to prove he isn't good enough.
That's my take on it. Klopp should have ignored the questions about Karius and focussed on the team. Guess he's human after all 😎.

The situation must be looked at wholistically and Ed as well as many other posters on this thread like Ron and Harry, have alluded to this. We cannot keep chopping and changing GK`s if the coaching part of this has not been looked into.

Our Goal Keepers are not improving whether it be Reina, thru Migs and Jones, right down to Karius, so we can`t put this all on them. I have always maintained that the media, pundits (LFC ex players included) targeted Karius, a young foreign GK with great potential and upside going thru a bad run, for issues with the team that go much further than his mistakes, some of which Klopp himself took responsibility for.

They targeted and bullied him in a bid to discredit Klopp (Nevilles) and in a bid to look unbiased (Carra and Redknapp) and many "fans" jumped on this non issue. With the Bros in Failure telling him to shut up and do his job just because he had the "audacity" to speak up for himself was embarrassing for them. They made it look like a GK could no longer make mistakes anymore whereas even the best GK`s make mistakes all the time.

Klopp should never have dropped him but I know why he did it. Migs is history and even he knows this so we shall see how Karius reacts to it.

I know nothing about goalkeeper coaching or coaching in general. What I do know is that, during Achterberg's time here, not a single goalkeeper has actually improved their game. Reina got noticeably worse, Mignolet lurched from disaster to disaster, younger goalkeepers like Jones, Ward, etc haven't been close and, in Ward's case, only looked decent away from the club. Karius has come of the back of what is a serious injury for goalkeepers and made a few basic mistakes. The point in there is no improvement to be seen anywhere in our goalkeepers and there hasn't been for a long time - it is a worry.

I know nothing about GK coaching so I cannot point the finger at Achterberg and say conclusively that he is the problem. What you can do is look at results and what has happened already and I think Reina is a the key player to look at. Here is a GK who, until Achterberg joined, was very very good. Not perfect, he was prone to mistakes from time-to-time, but very good and certainly the best goalkeeper we've had for 20 years or so. He declined badly whilst Achterberg was coach and in fact only started looking better again once he moved on to Napoli. That is a damning inditement of Achterberg but, by itself, proves little. The fact no goalkeeper has improved during his time points to the fact that he simply may not be good enough for the role he has at the club. Coaching is hugely important, even more so for younger players - the evidence suggests Achterberg is far from the right man for the job.

Spot on, Seano. Achteberg is not the reason Karius made the mistakes he made. But on a wider plaine, his coaching period correlates with Reina being worse or the others not improving and flat out stagnating hence, the issue is with him. As you say, coaching is important and we have numerous examples within our squad to attest to this point as players like Lallana, Can, Hendo and Origi were going nowhere until Klopp came in and fixed their issues. in statistics, they say that correlation is not always causation but I`m sorry in this case, IT IS.

I disagree ron, the coach should be reviewing games with the keepers and ironing out flaws in their game on a week by week basis. The flapping at crosses and suspect positioning are not one offs.

Also much like the manager, the coach also has to find coping mechanisms that help the keepers stay calm in presurrised situations and thereby help them make the right decisions at key moments.

The coach also has to brief the keeper on opposition strikers and their preferred penalty/ free kick direction etc so they are as prepared as possible. There is little evidence of any of the above since valero left and atcheburg was promoted. In fact our keepers have generally gotten worse.

No he cannot be out on the field with them but there is little or no evidence to show he is improving any of our keepers.
