Hey Eds and Reds,

Just giving my update on Danny Ward's performance in Huddersfield's 1-2 defeat at home to Wigan.

It was a bad result for Town against a side battling around the relegation places, and leaves them clinging onto a playoff place when a matter of weeks earlier, they were top of the Championship.

Despite the score line, Huddersfield dominated the game. Wigan's two goals were on the counter attack and Town had 70% possession. As such, Ward had little to do over 90 minutes.

He made a couple of reasonable saves, one down low from a Wildschut strike in the first half but he could do little about Burke's goal. A cross came in, deflected off a Town defender and left Burke unmarked and therefore Ward helpless to prevent the opening goal.

Wigan's second goal, well if I'm being honest, Ward left me unimpressed. Wildschut was too easily let through by a slow Town back line so Ward came out 1-on-1. He was slow to coke out in my view and his attempt to stop Wildschut, well frankly it wasn't great. He was all too easily roundedby Wildschut and that was 2-1.

You'll see from his stats, he didn't so much as have a catch to make aside that so an uneventful but poor night for Ward I'm afraid.

His kicking was otherwise fine but he was never given much difficulty with it.

He will have better games, games where he will perhaps have more moments to impress but last night won't be one to remember for him nor Huddersfield Town for that matter.

Hope that's ok for you guys!

I actually saw the game myself here in the States on BEIN Sports and I agree that Ward did not cover himself in glory with some of his decision making. I will say that his defence hung him out to dry at times due to mistakes or maybe the way David Wagner has them playing but boy, were they ripe for the taking on every counter attack from Wigan. Just a bad day at the office for the whole team and manager, IMO.

Couldn't agree more Hamilton. Wagner wants his team playing nice, expansive football but Hudson doesn't have the legs for it and he hasn't worked out his best partnership at the back. Tommy Smith has improved offensively as a right back but I have never rated him highly defensively. So yes, his defence did hang him out to dry at times but hopefully that will improve as Huddersfield get more used to Wagner's style.
