Paul Merson - "If Liverpool can buy Van Dijk for £50 million in January, they will take some beating. Defensively, they aren't going to be good enough, but if they can get Van Dijk, that nearly wins you the Premier League. "

Just more predictable tropes regurgitated out by British football 'experts'.

Due to whom Liverpool and City play this week, there is a good chance that after this weekend City will have an equal or larger 'goals conceded' tally than Liverpool, and that is despite Liverpool's more challenging start to the season. But what's the bet that they refuse to rule out City for the title while they still 'um and ah' about Liverpool because of defensive concerns.

I think it will be a mistake buying another Southampton player for a large sum of money. That club is like Arsenal. Those who goes out fails missebaly except Mane.
I would look Sule or Jonathan Tah ( Cheaper and actually brilliant ) .

Lallana has hardly failed miserably this season has he.

How the hell would adding Van Dijk make such a difference anyway?

Since the crazy first two games, we've only conceded 9 goals.

That's 9 goals in 11 games - a very good record.

Buying Van Dijk would not change anything, not the point where it's the difference between winning the title and not winning the title.

I'm telling people van dijk would be a quality singing . If we don't sign him a united or city would. I don't get people problem is from buying from saints . If the player is good to make the squad better surely that a good thing.

I agree Reus, if you don't want a player simply because he's from Southampton then you're not looking at the situation correctly.

That being said, we don't necessarily need him to win the title. He'd arguably improve the defence, but the defence is hardly the shambles the media wants people to believe.

{Ed001's Note - I am not sure he would improve things. In my opinion he is exactly what we do not need. He goes off wandering, when the situation demands he stays put, then doesn't get back quickly enough. Often he is stood watching the game, waiting to see what happens, rather than anticipating the situation and being decisive. He is a typical Brit-type player though, beloved because he is big and fast, despite having no intelligence on the pitch whatsoever.}

What I like to call MOTD player. Good in highlights every now an then.

Does Fonte basically make him look good?

{Ed001's Note - he organises things, plus they always play with a stopper in front, Wanyama last season and Romeu this season, who covers his lapses to a large degree. You still see Van Dijk often stood on the edge of the box with his hands on his hips nowhere near the play when they concede goal far too often.}

I have said this over a number of times we need to stop looking at defenders who has a DM playing ahead or two. Everyone on the Planet would look good with stopper ahead. Ask Lovren and Chris Smalling they all excels with two men in the midfield.
Liverpool play differently.

I bet merse pronounced van dijk wrong when he said this.

Ed001 - Would you rate Aldeweireld, Koscielny and Cahill ahead of Van Dijk?

{Ed001's Note - yes, yes and no.}

Thanks Ed001.

{Ed001's Note - very welcome mate.}

Alderweireld, Koscielny and Matip are probably the top 3 centre backs in the league to be honest.

These pundits should do stand up comedy because that`s how clueless they sound. Finally, someone who knows what they are talking about. Van Dyke is an average defender who looks good in a good defensive setup and in highlight reels, tracking back to make last ditch tackles where as he was out of position to begin with. Just with Skrtel who looked good with Masche and Lucas in front of him or in a 3-5-2 defensive system whereas individually, he was pants.

At saint Mary`s, Saints played with Romeu and Hojbjerg in front of their defense hence, the protection was there. Yet Van Dyke still went walk about and lost Firmino and had to grab his shirt to stop him from getting on the end of the ball. on a good day, that is a red card. This is what Ed is alluding to and I`m glad he saw it.

We don`t need him and he is NO upgrade on Lovren as Matip is not even on the same planet as Van Dyke. This is coming from the media who think Stones is the furure at CB whereas the guy is a dud. I`ll take Klopp`s opinion any day over these media "pundits".

Koscienly is the best by a mile. He has been up there consistently from years now. There's is nothing he is poor at. A pair of Matip and Kosc would win title.

29 Nov 2016 12:17:28
Go on then Ed let's have it, all non Liverpool, best CB in the league, most overrated and one for the future.

{Ed001's Note - Alderweireld, Van Dijk, Jack Stephens (Soton).}

Who would you sign to sort the problem ed1? Just interested to know what you think would help.

{Ed001's Note - what problem? There hasn't been much of a problem since Matip and Karius have been in the team! What do we need to sort?}

17.) 29 Nov 2016
29 Nov 2016 13:58:19
But do you not think matip would improve him? he's not xoming in to play alsongside a wannabee.

{Ed001's Note - no, I don't think he is the right player to play alongside him. Van Dijk needs to play alongside someone else, anyone else, so long as it is not at our club.}

Whether we need him or not I'd have alderweirld tomorrow. Having said this i'm happy with how we are, we don't need him or ANYBODY in my opinion. We have a squad who are capable. I know it won't happen but in summer I'd then welcome alderweirld with open arms.

We will win the league with or without Van Dijk. 😎.

Spot on, LFC16. I would take Alderweireld as well. In fact, I can easily name 5 CB`s in the PL alone that are better than the overrated Van Dyke. Matip, Alderweireld, Koscielnty, Ben Gibson and Fonte. I`m sure if I do more research, I`ll come up with more.
