If I was Owen I would have retired football and Become a jockey before Signing for Manchester Untied.

{Ed041's Note - got his league title :)

I knew the united thing, and trust me I absolutely hate united, but I thought something else happened that caused the dislike.

{Ed001's Note - it was while he was at Liverpool. In his schoolboy days he would always wear an Everton kit and made it known he didn't actually want to be at Liverpool. Later when he was in the team, he would bully the youngsters coming through into playing cards for high stakes, which they couldn't afford but he could. He threw his toys out of the pram until Fowler was sold because he wanted to play alongside Heskey and didn't like God being the hero over him. Then when Rafa came in and asked him to stay as we were short of attackers, he told Rafa where to go in no uncertain terms with the suggestion that he was bigger than Liverpool.}

Redmen Reus - which Liverpool fans love Owen? Not sure I've ever met anyone who did. To add to what the Eds said, he forced himself out of the club for a measly fee at a time when he'd just won European Player of the Year (or something) . Was always a 'career' footballer rather than someone like a Carragher or a Gerrard who (like them or not) actually loved the club.

Thanks Ed001. Sounds like the dislike is deserved.

{Ed001's Note - he was a horrible little get, always thought he was above the rest.}

The annoying thing was that the media portrayed him to be this humble quiet young man that was Liverpool through and through when nothing could of been further from the truth.

Ed, that is an interesting view/ account.? i say this having just finished reading the Owen chapter of Ring of Fire. The book is obviously the views/ thoughts of the people themselves, but Owen obviously feels more than a little hard done by in relation to how he is viewed by our fans given the lengths he says he went to in order to secure a return to Liverpool after his gap year 😀 in Madrid.

From what you say the view of the fans is more layered and deep seated than just that he ended up at United (and left relatively cheaply when we could probably have done with keeping him) .

As I say it is interesting to get the additional angles so soon after reading his thoughts on things.

Goes to show, always at least 3 sides to every story!

{Ed001's Note - he was desperate to return, but Rafa wouldn't deal with him after learning what a tosser he was while here.}

I guess we now know why he was rejected when he tried to come back to LFC.

from what I remember, M Owen left Liverpool for Spain, very very late in the transfer window, we didn't get much for him, and took a right winger included in the deal, he tried, but wasnt really that good . the following season we won the Champions League cup final, and M. Owen was history . what I will say about him, he scored a lot of goals for us .

He won us an FA cup when Henchoz paid the referee off to ignore a raft of nailed on penalties.
Tbh I loved him when he played for us and he scored some fantastic goals for us.
It was a shame he played in the same era as Fowler otherwise the fans might have taken to him better.
I bow to eds superior knowledge but I will always remember Owen for his goals and match winning performances.

I watched all of Owens career home and away and up until he left for Madrid I can't recall anyone disliking him, he scored for fun, a lot of times out of just half chances with his speed and finishing ( not as a natural finisher like Robbie though) . He did shaft us though when he slid off to Madrid and went down in my estimations and dropped lower even thinking about going to the mancs. All the off the field stuff Ed01 speaks about is fair enough.
Never the same player after his hamstring injuries but was great to watch from his debut onwards in my opinion.

Ever seen the video of him with big Nev and the young lad in goal. Just completely takes the piss out the young keeper and you can see Southall getting more and more irked by him. plus, crap commentator.

The fact that Owen was one of the last (if at all) to get his name sung pre game shows what many fans thought of him. Particularly given his success.
I went to college with his girlfriend (now wife) but didn't know Owen. But his reputation and aloofness on the few occasions I did meet him wasnt good. So the attitude he shown when leaving liverpool is certainly in keeping with his reputation.
On his playing for liverpool, lots of the big north west clubs. and Everton. were interested in signing him. I'm not sure if this is significant in him choosing us, but his dad got a nice sweetener. I can't recall exactly what it was but I think it was a new car.
That's one of the things amuses me with the tapping up issue. Things like that have been happening for years and will continue to do so. And it's not unique to Liverpool.
